Clare county appeals for support in the Michigan Tuberculosis Association drive as envelopes with 1951 seals go out. The effort stresses that tuberculosis remains a holiday problem and every contribution aids prevention and health programs.
Harl Dwyer a Clare dispatch clerk will retire November 30 after more than 35 years in the local post office. He began service November 4, 1916, with moves from the Doherty building to the Mater Building and later to the Federal Post Office. Born December 13, 1886 in Clare, he raised a large family and remains active in St. Cecilia's Church and the Knights of Columbus.
A 1952 model farm management program titled Barnyard Economics will debut December 7 at 1 30 p m in Gladwin Community Building. Experts Everett Hiwood and Jim Nielson will discuss four topics including farm management outlook, income tax changes for farmers, grassland farming, and paths to farming success. All welcome to attend with time for questions and discussion.
Gloharice Vent Stevens of Muskegon was arraigned in Municipal Court on two charges after a Monday arrest. He pled guilty to driving while intoxicated on US-10 and was fined 50 dollars and jailed 60 days. He also pled guilty to driving on a revoked license with a choice of a 15 dollar fine or 15 more days in jail. Stevens has four prior drunken driving convictions, including one in Mt. Pleasant on October 10, 1949 and three in Muskegon County. Dewayne Parks of Elmore was arrested for failure to stop in assured clear distance on McEwan Street and fined 10 dollars after pleading guilty. Dennis Murphy was arrested on a warrant for reckless driving on US-10, pled guilty, and was fined 57 dollars and 60 cents.
Mrs. M. D. Feighner sustained serious injuries in a Monday afternoon collision at a Midland street intersection. She underwent surgery for scalp wounds and a broken vertebrae at Midland Hospital. In the other car driven by John Waskevich, fourteen year old Carolyn Waskevich and passengers Janie Widen and Mike were injured. no tickets issued as witnesses said the crash was unavoidable.

Michigan conservation officers report that illegal hunting of hen pheasants and possession of illegal birds led to 40 violations totaling 2,269 dollars. Nine arrests occurred in Wayne county, five in Macomb, and four in Bay county, with at least one arrest in each of 16 southern counties.
Clare Pioneers begin 1961 52 basketball season with a road game against Reed City after rebuilding under coach Bill Seitz. Despite 10 lettermen returning and 12 vying for starting spots, height is limited. Benedict transfers in. Home games follow at 7 30 p m against St Louis and Coleman.
Pontiac Motor Division completed a nationwide series of factory and dealer meetings in 25 cities starting November 19 to discuss the 1952 line. Production is underway to supply dealers for public display in early December with engineering updates on engine performance and power transmission.
Organized youth groups may reserve summer group camps as the conservation department announces. Applications must be mailed to the parks division in Lansing. Youth groups have first call on 18 camps in 13 park and recreation areas. adult group applications start after June 1. Open dates include Pickerel Lake, Highland, Mill Lake at Waterloo, Island Lake, and Ludington camps and areas.
Despite icy pavements and heavy hunter traffic, area roads reported no major crashes last week. Notable incidents include Mrs. Kenneth Roe injured and hospitalised after a Hill Road collision, Richard Roe treated for forehead abrasions, and several tickets issued for improper passing and excessive speed amid multi-vehicle accidents with varying damages. Police noted multiple minor injuries and property damage across US 27 and nearby routes.
A deer swam out into Lake Thirteen Monday afternoon and Conservation officers with help from locals loaded a duck boat onto a pickup and launched to reach the animal. After an hour and a half effort a heavy scow was used to pull the doe ashore and back to the mainland where she was left for recovery. Witnesses numbered about fifty as the rescue unfolded along the lake’s edge.
A Michigan Department of Agriculture tree checking post was set up near the hunting season to prevent tree theft and disease spread. Inspector J. W. Linn leads with inspectors McNeil, Martin, Coon, and Cunningham patrolling US-10 and highways. Rodney Ritter was fined $14 after pleading guilty to possession and transport of trees without a bill of sale.
The Pioneer 1951 football team voted quarterback Rich Smith as most valuable player and halfback Dick Woodworth as honorary captain. Rich Smith receives a trophy and Dick Woodworth a football. Coach Seitz praises Rich as the most improved yet always in the game and notes Dick as a hard running back.

Within six days nine hunters died from gunshots eleven died from heart attacks and five from other causes thirty three more were wounded as the week began. Notable injuries included Eli Thompson a 55 year old Chippewa Indian shot in the neck near Roscommon and Wilfred Mullett a 29 year old Chippewa Indian shot in the back in Grimon township both in Michigan.
The Clare Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on McEwan Street near Johnston Elevator at 6 15 pm Wednesday. A fifteen ton load of potatoes was saved by water. bags and vehicle damaged, costs pegged at 260 to 300 dollars. The truck and load were owned and driven by J Goodgell of Lansing.
Richard Wheeler and Robert Taylor both of St Louis and Alton Allen Jr of St Louis were fined after admitting possession of a doe deer in Surrey township. Separate cases include Rex I. Shay of Jonesville with a loaded gun in his car and three other hunters fined for similar violations in Freeman Lincoln townships.
Clare High School affirmative team Carolyn Schreiber and Bill Wentworth will debate Bay City St Joseph in their first contest on November 27 as part of the Michigan High School Forensic Association schedule. The event, led by Hayden Carruth, involves about 2000 students nationwide and concludes with a final in Ann Arbor on April 25, 1952.
Gladwin county sheriff's officers arrested 17 year old Harry Mitchell on a manslaughter charge after his 14 year old step-sister Marie Mitchell was fatally shot in the face with a 20 gauge shotgun. Mitchell admits the shooting claiming accidental discharge while he tried to scare her. He was arraigned and held to circuit court under a 5000 dollar bond.
The first six days of Michigan's hunting season brought heavy traffic and a rising casualty list. State officers note traffic jams along US 27 US 10 and US 2 as homeward hunters travel from Mackinaw City to Clare amid icy roads. Several large deer and bears are reported, with notable buck sizes and several local residents winning early contest awards.
The United States Department of Agriculture releases that township ballots listing candidates for PMA Community Committeemen and Delegates to the county PMA annual convention were mailed this week to all eligible former voters in Clare county.
