A northern deer hunting surge defied OPA gas ration crackdowns and ODT war necessity rules as hunters crowded ferries and roads. OPA halted hearings briefly but resumed on the dockside squeeze with notices to drivers, while some raced home.
The Michigan health department reports 4 779 approved applications for medical care for wives and infants of men in service, from 5 649 received to date. Funds from Congress and the Children's Bureau finance medical and hospital care, administered by the state health department, for services from the signing date. Applications come from wives of service men in the four lowest grades and require the husband’s physician to sign.
A large black and tan female hound with a white front foot and a scar on the left ear was picked up by two men living on US 27 near Rosebush. A ten dollar reward is offered to anyone who finds her and notifies W. B. Davidson in Bentley Michigan or Bell.
The next child health clinic in the County Nurse, Mrs. Wilma Allen's office will be held next Friday November 26 from 1 to 4 PM. Mothers should bring well babies and pre-schoolers for weighing measuring examination and immunization against small pox and diphtheria no charge for examination or immunization.

No. 18 War Ration Book I and No. 1 airplane stamp in War Ration Book III remain valid with no expiry. War Food Administration via Commodity Credit Corp offers Dairy Feed Payments for Q4 1943 to eligible producers from Oct 1 to Dec 31 1943. Clare County Agricultural Conservation Association coordinates outreach with a calendar of town hall meetings from Nov 17 to Nov 30. Bring October milk and cream slips. payment rates are 30 cents per hundredweight for milk and 4 cents per pound for butter fat.
A meeting for Homemakers in Clare is set for Monday November 22 at 8 00 p m in the Home Economics room to discuss improved meat canning methods led by Mrs Bradley. W C Hull of Chesapeake & Ohio and Pere Marquette told the Detroit Association of Credit Men at Hotel Statler that American railroads handled a war stimulated traffic surge beyond capacity. He noted railroads entered World War I with 10,000 fewer locomotives and 50,000 fewer freight cars but met each rising demand.
Clare High School Homemaking III class of seven boys and six girls, supervised by Miss Graves, will gain work experience in local businesses during class time starting November 29. Half the class assists businesses while the others run the school lunch program, testing aptitudes to guide future careers.
Sentinel office requests advertisers and correspondents to submit copy a day early next week to enable staff to observe Thanksgiving Day at home with their families. Cooperation will be appreciated.
Special Thanksgiving services will be held at Clare Baptist Church Sunday evening at 7 30 with four local churches uniting. Rev Chas B Hahn Rev Harold Watson Rev Harry L Cleveland and Rev Harley B Redman will participate along with Rev George E Hughes delivering the evening message. Special music and singing are planned and all are invited to attend.
Zenobia Chapter held an impressive ceremony with flags presented and the audience singing The Star Spangled Banner. Mrs Frances Reed Glover and other dignitaries attended as officers were installed by Midland official Avances Reed Glover assisted by Greta Masten and Mary Nelson. Mabel Reynolds was named Worthy Matron amid a flower ceremony by six children and local members.
Clare Fire Department members and guests gathered at Barnes Cafe to honor William Lange who retired after forty one years with the force. Fire Chief Albert Haley lauded his career from early days of manual equipment as Theo Bowler presented a $25 War Bond and praise for Lange’s dedication.
Harold Jones narrowly escaped death when his car caught fire after leaving the road near Clare. He used a suede jacket to block the flames, but the vehicle crashed into a tree and he suffered a forehead gash, shock, a sprained ankle, and bruises before recovery with crutches.
Virginia Mae LaPratt six months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank LaPratt of this city died in her sleep between midnight and morning after a brief illness. She was born May 28 and is survived by her parents sister Hazel grandparents William LaPratt and Mr and Mrs Cleve Morris and other relatives. Prayer services were held at Doherty Funeral Home with Rev Fr Morrison officiating and she was laid to rest in St Cecilia’s Cemetery.
