Armistice Day was observed at the Clare High School with a full auditorium and a program led by Commander Stanley L. Masten. Past Commander Tibbits spoke as the speaker, following a Drum and Bugle Corps parade and a band performance. Mayor John D. Dunlop urged Red Cross support during the annual drive running from November 11 to Thanksgiving Day.

November Ninth Meeting of Clare Study Club at Kennedy Home
Twenty members attended the Clare Study Club meeting at Mrs. Kennedy’s home. Plans were laid for a public Benefit Bridge at the Community Building on Wednesday evening November 17 at 8 p.m. Tickets 35 cents. The group also organized reciprocity day for December 7 and heard talks on period furniture with illustrations.

Walter H Latman Post No 128 held its first regular meeting of the month Monday evening at Frank Keplinger four miles north of Farwell. Commander Masten presided with 18 members and one visitor present as Adjutant Damoth reported strong dues reception for 1938 and urged members to pay. Last Rites For Victims Of Stove Explosion
Last rites were held for Truman Vernelle Smith and Marie Beatrice Loudema House, two victims of a stove explosion. Smith, born March 31 1907 in Isabella County, died November 1 1937 in Mt Pleasant at age 30 years 7 months. he was a father of Layle Vernelle and Barbara Onalee, with Barbara dying in 1980. House, born September 32 1906 in Isabella County, died November 4 in Mt Pleasant at age 31 years 1 month 13 days. They married in February 1926. Smith worked on the Star Mail route and later at Central State Oil and Gas Co. in Mt Pleasant. House died from burns suffered at their home.

Lightning Strikes Two Buildings in Central Michigan Storm
During a Sunday night electric storm in central Michigan lightning struck the Dr B J Sanford farm barn three miles north and seven east of Clare injuring no one. Tenant Seba Umphrey and his son fought a small fire with water from a creek. The State Garage at the west city limits was also struck with roof damage but little further harm occurred.

Tree Planting Planned at Higgin's Lake Reserve

Clare Community Fair Attracts Record Crowd At School
The Clare Community Fair drew an estimated 1400 visitors in afternoon and evening sessions at the school house. Exhibits in classrooms and gymnasium featured agricultural and home economics displays, judged by Lee Marsa and Miss Clara Hasso of Hivart school, with prizes awarded to students from Carrow Colonville McKinley Randall Wildcat etc.

Clare Debating Team Joins Michigan Forensic Association
Clare high school enters the Michigan High School Forensic Association and will compete in state wide contests this season. Superintendent E Dale Kennedy will coach the team as over 300 high schools have enrolled to date. Debating will focus on Unicameral Legislature with spring contests on the horizon. Gas firm plans to use Sherman field gas for Michigan supply
Gas Corporation of Michigan plans to source gas from the Sherman field in West Isabella to augment dry gas for Mt. Pleasant and Clare services next year. Negotiations for the casing-head gas are advanced, with a possible new dry gas reserve affecting plans. A 100 million cubic foot loan from Consumers Power aids winter needs. a 13 mile 4-inch line is being built by Gentry Engineering. Wet gas would require a sulphur plant and compressor, then mixing with dry gas to meet BTU targets.
