Ex-service Men Hold Clare County Banquet

Sixty veterans from Clare and northern Isabella counties gathered at Beale's restaurant Harrison for the Walter A. Larivan post banquet. EB Johnston outlined post work and plans, T Carl Holbrook spoke on benefits, N L Ibbets reported aid from the veterans bureau, and members pledged renewals and new dues as the campaign starts November 11. The group also voted to renew Clare city library magazines.

Dairy Alfalfa Meetings to Begin in Clare County

Plans are completed for a series of dairy alfalfa meetings for Clare County farmers. MSU extension specialists and local farmers will discuss dairy improvement, alfalfa, and sweet clover growing at farms across the county. Meetings start Monday November 12 with sessions at Simon Vanderwood Winterfield, Chas Wheelers Redding, and Hol Bruce Green Wood, followed by events November 13 14 and 16 at various townships and halls.

The Good Literature Club postpones its regular meeting due to the Lycéum course on Monday. All members should plan to meet at Mrs. Mercer’s home next Tuesday evening.

Golden Fiftieth Anniversary at Farwell Couple's Large Family

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dell of Surrey observed their Golden Wedding on Sunday October 21. Forebears pioneers at Farwell, they live on a homestead with twelve living children, twenty eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A dinner for over forty marked the day with a giant cake and a miniature couple atop. A verse by George S. Morrow honors the couple’s long union and family devotion.

Clare Study Club entertains teachers at Hotel Doherty

The Clare Study Club hosted city schoolteachers as guests last Tuesday at the Hotel Doherty. Mrs. A J Doherty Jr acted as hostess and Mrs. Allan welcomed guests. A piano duo performed Momentary Caprice and Sogarnella, followed by a one act satirical play Stourteen featuring Mrs. Josephine Anderson and others.

Lumberjacks and Rivermen Organize Park Fund Drive

A Clare Isabella county group describes forming a Lumberjacks and Rivermen association to manage a forty acre pine grove bought as a memorial park. They detail a $3000 purchase price with $200 down and five years to pay, current receipts, dues, and a plan for ongoing fundraising and member recruitment.

Revival Meetings at Church of God on West 6th Street

City Council Grants Free Water to Churches

The council approved free water for churches and parsonages, a move led by Mayor R. L Heather. Revs. Hurd and Johnson spoke on church work and community ties, noting other towns grant similar aid and crediting a successful new well for feasibility.

Night School Another Success

The Clare night school session held during Education Week drew many parents and patrons despite bad weather. Superintendent G R Bogan arranged a welcoming program with classes from the morning session and visitors toured rooms while teachers and pupils worked, praising the faculty and noting the high scholarship standard and clean, orderly school facilities.

Clare Chamber of Commerce Meets Monday Evening

The Clare Chamber of Commerce will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Phelps Cafeteria next Monday evening after a 6 30 dinner served by Nora J. Barnes. President T Carl Holbrook will lead a program for business men with winter activity announcements. A Scotch band will perform and two Michigan State College representatives will discuss Dairying and Alfalfa growing, aiding Clare businesses. Reservations urged by Holbrook or Cudney.

Armistice Day Observed In Clare With Program

Armistice Day will be properly observed in Clare Sunday afternoon with a program by the Walter H. Larman post of the American Legion. Dennis B. Alward will deliver the address, Clare high school band will provide music, and a parade precedes the ceremonies at three o'clock in the high school auditorium. The list includes a male quartet and Flanders Field recitation, with extra seats planned to accommodate attendees.

Masonic Lodge Harrison Hosts Large Visiting Party

John J. Carton lodge at Harrison entertained nearly one hundred visitors from Shepherd Clare and Farwell. Salt River Lodge degree team from Shepherd demonstrated the third degree on two candidates. Guests later enjoyed an oyster supper at the opera house with praise for the ladies who served and prepared the menu.

Annual Red Cross Drive Opens Sunday in Clare County

Armistice Day marks the nationwide Red Cross drive with Clare County confident to meet duty. Mrs. G. B. Bogan chairs the district with solicitors and districts arranged. The drive aims to complete within three days, with half of funds remaining in the county and members urged to enroll early or mail a dollar and enrollment card to Mrs. Mary Gilmore in Clare.

The Clare high school football team defeated Evart by 25 points on Friday as Clare dominated play. Evart’s squad, coached by Eddie Hubel, fought hard and earned respect with persistent effort, while Clare’s line and backfield combined for seventeen first downs and a strong showing.

The three act drama Smilin Through presented by Interstate Entertainment Series features a strong cast led by Bob Transcom.
