New 4 Lane Bridge On M 61 Spans Muskegon River
In 1949 plans were begun to replace the Muskegon River bridge on M 61 west of Temple. The old structure with 100 and 60 foot truss spans and a 50 foot I beam approach was widened to a 382 foot clear roadway with two 18 inch safety walks. The project cost 179769.85 and was completed with approaches in 1951 traffic began using the new bridge in 1961 under Michigan State Highway Department and US Bureau of Public Roads funding. Walter Torbe and Company built the bridge. Jesse Stanley did the approaches.

Edsel Pelcher 27 of Clare and Donald Moose 49 of Mt Pleasant collided on US 27 a mile north of Clare. Six people including Pelcher and Moose were hospitalized with multiple injuries. Pelcher pled guilty to reckless driving as police reported a witness said Pelcher tried to pass another vehicle before the collision.

Leo Roy Johnson 19 of Lansing was arrested by Chief Warren J. Decker on a complaint from a mother of a five year old Clare girl. Early resident laid to rest at Farwell
Kittie Dell Madison McIntosh born February 7 1873 in Saginaw county Michigan died October 25 1951 aged 78 years eight months and 18 days. She was married to John McIntosh on June 5 1904 and is survived by son Gordon sister Mary Jane Chappel brother John Madison and granddaughter Elva Lea McIntosh. Funeral services were held at her home with Rev Marl H Redman officiating and interment in Surrey Township Cemetery Farwell.

Paul F. Becker of Bessemer accepted the scepter of Grand High Priest of Michigan's Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons on October 20.
