Dennis E Alward, Famed Michigan Republican Leader, Dies
Dennis E Alward longtime secretary of the Michigan State Senate and trusted adviser to governors and U S senators died in Detroit at 12 30 after a stroke. He was 71 born in Niles and built Clare Press into a statewide GOP weekly before serving in state and national posts. Funeral held in Lansing with interment in Battle Creek. son and daughter survived.

Clare Fire Department Praised For Quick Action At Rotary Lake Fire
Through Conservation Officer Eugene Pettit and County Fire Warden Lyman Frisby Clare Fire Department received high praise for their rapid response to a brush fire at the Boy Scout Camp near Rotary Lake on May 17 1930. The Saginaw Area Council Boy Scouts commended the department citing it prevented damage to camp buildings and saved the day.

The Bowler well number one northwest of the city reached 1075 feet on a Wednesday morning as drilling continued without trouble. McKay-Mercier number three was filled to the Traverse sand and to be shot that day to try to bring in Traverse oil first shown during drilling. She married Lewis E Welch July 19 1901 at Farwell Michigan and had a daughter Mabel Bergey and son Basil. Funeral at Church of God of Clare with Elder G W Burt officiating and six shop girls from A C plant helping lay her to rest.
