CHS Awards Highlight Dick Roe and Sharon Gaspeny

Clare High School announced its top awards at the annual awards assembly Monday. Dick Roe won the Wichert baseball trophy for a .316 batting average, and Sharon Gaspeny earned the VFW Award for leadership, scholarship, and activity.

Gladwin Beef Bull Sale set for June 6 at Gladwin Fairgrounds

The Gladwin Beef Bull Show and Sale returns Thursday June 6 at the Gladwin Fairgrounds. Forty four bulls mainly Hereford and Angus will be shown and sold by thirty one consignors from nineteen counties. MSU expert H F Moxley notes bull sales drive northern Michigan beef industry through better sires and commercial herd improvements.

VW Post 5738 Color Guard To Wear New Uniforms

The VW Post 5738 Color Guard will wear new uniforms for the Memorial Day parade after successful fund raising. Guard members include Robert Rowley Robert Schelihas Robert Cimmerer Jack Rodabaugh James McDonald Bruce Milholm Don Richmond and Neil Ackerman. Northland Drive-In Opens Under New Management

The Northland Drive-In on US 27 south of Clare opens tonight May 25 with a widened screen and remodeled concession stands. New pricing charges one dollar per car regardless of passengers, under management of Arthur Chipman and his son Russell, who run theatres in Ionia Big Rapids and Greenville.

Second Graders Stage Mothers Program With Operetta

Mrs. Florence Kane's second grade presented The Ugly Duckling operetta along with folk dances and stories and songs for mothers on May 23 and 24. The Thursday and Friday performances were held in the kindergarten room for attending mothers and will be shown again for the grade children.

The new post office building at Harrison will be dedicated this Saturday June 1 with a District Postmasters representative to speak. Final plans to be announced after a Tuesday afternoon meeting. Delwin Grange Celebrates 25th Year

Delwin Grange marks its 25th anniversary at the grange hall with an open meeting on June 4 at 9 p.m. Michigan State Grange officers will attend for a dedication. The hall has been in use longer than the group has existed.

Swiss Couple Visits Friends In Clare

Mr and Mrs Henry Walti of Oberkulm Switzerland arrived in Harrison on Saturday May 18 to visit Mrs Minnie Stuermer and family. They were childhood neighbors until fifty three years ago. A dinner in their honor brought together thirty five relatives and friends at the Greenwood Township Hall. The Walti visit will include stops with their sons in Corvallis Oregon and Victoria British Columbia before returning to Switzerland in September.

Scouts Earn Praise at Tomahawk District Camporee

Scouts and Explorers from Tomahawk District Valley Trails Council set up camps and demonstrated Scoutcraft skills at the Camp Weidman Camporee near Mt Pleasant. 105 Scouts and leaders attended as Gratiot District units joined the event with Beaver and Eagle Patrols from Mt. Pleasant competing for the Weidman Trophy.

Clare Post Office Adopts Later Hours in 1957 Schedule

The Clare Post Office will close on Decoration Day with no window service or deliveries. Regular mail pickups from drop boxes will occur and dispatch will continue. From June 1 1957 windows run Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 30 pm Saturday 9 am to 12 noon.

Clare Mfg Picnic Set for June 15 at Clare County Fairgrounds

Annual company picnic for Clare Manufacturing employees and families will be held at the Clare County Fairgrounds in Harrison on Saturday June 15. All employees including those on lay-off are invited. An amateur contest is planned with acts in vocal dance and instrumental. Clare High School prepares a June 5 commencement with 72 seniors. Dr Daniel J Sorrells of Central Michigan College will deliver Today's Design For Living at the outdoor program on the green. Barbara Scheer Hurt When Car Hits Horse

Barbara Scheer fifteen daughter of Mr and Mrs George Scheer of Clare suffered a skull fracture and concussion when thrown from her horse after it bolted in front of a car on US 10. Dr E J Gershon treated her and reported some improvement Tuesday. she remains a patient at Clare General Hospital.

Farwell seniors honor ill student with class trip

Farwell High School senior Donald Tiedeman could not join a class trip to Chicago due to illness. On Tuesday evening May 21 twenty seniors brought the trip to him, hosting a potluck lunch and a bus ride to Eight Point Lake where he was guest of honor. They surprised him by presenting his class ring, which had been fully paid for.

School Board Candidate Petitions Due in Clare County

Nominating petitions for the Clare County fourth class districts must be signed by at least 25 qualified electors and filed with the board secretary by 4 p.m. June 18. Clare Chamber of Commerce membership drive soars in 1957

The Clare Chamber of Commerce reports 167 members have paid dues totaling 2510 with final results expected near 2660. The drive began May 7 with a breakfast at The Doherty and involved active outreach by President Ben J Burdo and Secretary Al Ott to enlist business professionals and manufacturers in Clare and nearby areas.
