The Michigan Days for Victory drive runs seven days starting May 28 in 179 Michigan communities. Stores showcase Michigan grown produce and offer tips on nutrition to support the war effort and keep home front families healthy.
Henry Fisch a Hamilton township resident for forty years died at home last Tuesday after years of ill health. Born January 24 1867 in Germany he came to the United States in 1894 and settled in Ohio before moving to Clare county in 1902. He married Louise Winter on July 4 1897 and had six children two sons and four daughters. Survived by his widow six children two brothers Robert and Emil a sister Mrs Rose Manthey and many friends. The funeral was held at the Hamilton Lutheran Cemetery with services noted for a long life ending at age 75 years 4 months and 25 days.
Memorial Day activities in Clare include a 10:00 a m assembling at Clare City Park with a 10:30 a m march. Walter H. Larman Post 128 along with the American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars and Sons of the American Legion organize color guards and a parade. A ceremony at Gherry Grove Cemetery features invocations, musical selections by the Clare High School Band, speeches by local figures, and firing squads. The program starts at City Hall at 10:00 a m and concludes with a tribute to Ex-Service Men.
The scrap metal collection campaign to aid munition production runs through Monday June 1. Farmers and residents collected about 110 tons last week, with weigh stations listed in Clare Farwell and Harrison and reminders to bring metal before Memorial Day closures. Local businesses and the Farwell Lumber Co and Geo J Lehr are praised for advertising support.
Clare High School closes for summer as faculty scatter across Michigan and beyond. Marian McGregor to wed June 12 in Augusta, Georgia, others head to Ionia, Hart, Alma, Ypsilanti, Detroit, Findlay, and more. Several will work or study at Michigan camps, universities, and plants while some stay in Clare for local duties.
United Service Organizations drive kicks off with a goal of 1250 dollars for county service activities. Clara Study Club and Clara Good Literature Club volunteers help mobilize. Farwell and Surrey township already meet their 100 dollar quotas. Harrison city and remaining townships to begin solicitation days.
The Campaign for Navy Relief Society funds to aid needy families of Navy men closed successfully in Clare County and four southeastern townships. County total reached 610.88 dollars against a 500 dollar quota with city and township volunteers listing many active workers and local leaders.
The Vernon township Board of Review will meet at the town hall on June 2 and on June 9 and 23 at 9509 Helsck Piseach. Walsh Supervisgr invites residents to attend at their town hall to present assessments and concerns.
Dr. Frank B. Bicknell of Clare, a Clare High and University of Michigan medical graduate, is commissioned a Captain and will serve as medical control officer at Fort Belvoir Virginia. Staff Sgt. Neil D. Maxwell, Clare native, is among Michigan air corps graduates at Gulf Coast Training Center and Ellington Field, with wings mailed to his mother and girlfriend.
At a New York Victory Meeting of American Bankers Association employees it was stated banks have sold 85 percent of the 5 billion dollar War Savings Bonds. Treasury figures show 5.339 billion raised in 1941-42 versus 935 million Baby Bonds in 1940-41. Quotas for June and July are set at 800 million and 1 billion respectively.
Funeral services were held at Murphy Funeral Home in Harrison at 2 PM Monday for Mrs. Herbert Sharp who died Friday after an appendectomy at Glare Hospital. She was 27 years old. She leaves her husband and her mother, Mrs Bertha Grover, plus siblings and extended relatives. The obituary notes her late residence in Dover prior to marriage.
Local rationing board lists May 12 allocations with names, roles, and items for tires tubes and retreads. Notable entries include farmers Glen Stanfield Fred Schneider and Bert Sinclair. oil field workers Darius Scott Anselm Mitchell. and dairy dealer Cornwell Ranch Co. Also notes May 22 decisions for Budded stations and additional applicants including Freeman Oil Co and Martin Loomis.
D. J. Coulson, 36, of Clare, employed at Ford bomber plant Willow Run, was killed in a head-on crash on US 16 east of Williamston. Kenneth Stock, 20, of Grand Rapids, suffered a fractured leg. Charles Pussee, 19, also of Grand Rapids, sustained multiple injuries. Two others were injured. Coulson’s death followed multiple fractures and lacerations. The injured were treated at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. funeral arrangements were announced in Jackson after services in Lansing.
The Michigan Department of Revenue will mail intangible tax vouchers this week totaling 1,813,356.64 dollars to cities villages and townships as two thirds of the third semi annual distribution. The statewide total is 2,720,034.96 dollars with one third going to the general fund. Local recipients include Clare 3161.24 Gladwin 3237.83 Isabella 3963.79 Missaukee 2771.73 Osceola 4591.61 Roscommon 1265.46 Midland 9347.43.
Wartime controls curtail bus service across the Great Lakes line. A 40 mph speed limit will be enforced and secondary departures cut to free buses for high demand routes. Regular second sections require adequate passenger counts and charter coaches are limited to wartime needs. Travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays advised.
