The Clare Kiwanis Club and Michigan Bell personnel met at Hotel Doherty to mark the fifty five year history of telephone service in Clare since A B Bell’s early work in 1887. Local operators and staff from Clare in 1898 through present times were honored as Michigan Bell Manager Max Winston praised Clare as a friendly town and noted advances in sound in films and radio amplification. Michigan counties receive 1942 gas tax refunds
Counties across Michigan received $2,000,000 in gas tax refunds this week, the first half of the McNitt Act payment. The allocations bring the year to date highway revenue for counties and cities to $19,026,330.39 with weight tax first quarter returns already accounted for. Fred Eschenweck a longtime community resident died at his farm home two miles south of Farwell on May 14 1942 at age 66 years 6 months and 15 days He was born October 29 1875 in Schirolbronn Oehringen Württemberg Germany and came to America at seventeen He married Jennie Dowherty on October 2 1900 and had fourteen children eleven living Funeral services were held at the Clare Baptist Church with interment at Cherry Grove Cemetery.
