The National Council of Catholic Women brought together 193 women from nine parishes at Clare St Cecilia’s on May 21 for Benediction and a business session. Attendees from Clare, Harrison, Rosebush, Biz Rapids, Remus, Bear City, Mt. Pleasant, and Shepherd attended as reports from council presidents and committee leaders were presented.

Weight tax returns totalling over one million dollars
Highway Commissioner Charles M. Ziegler announced last week that vouchers totaling 1,087.07 for the return of 1944 first quarter weight tax returns to the auditor general's office have been sent and payment will be promptly made. The entire weight tax collection supports county roads and city streets, with the first quarter total at 1,040,071.97 and Clare and nearby counties listed with specific amounts.

Milam Dies After Illness in Clare County
Jake Bell Milam, longtime Clare county resident, died Sunday after a prolonged illness. Born December 25, 1861 in Terre Haute Indiana, he was the last of ten siblings. Survived by his wife Lucy Kurtz Milam, six children born, five preceded him, a son Claude of Ohio, a granddaughter Chet at home, and another granddaughter Mrs. Robert Knapp of Miami Florida. Funeral services and burial were arranged with Doherty Funeral Home and St. Cecilia's Cemetery following a prayer service led by Rev. Fr. Chas D. Brophy.

Congregational Mother Daughter Banquet Held May 24
One hundred seventy five mothers and daughters attended the Congregational Church annual Banquet. Mrs. Allen Graham of Farwell spoke, sharing nature readings and poetry on a westward trip. The program featured solos and duets by several church members and tributes to the mothers and daughters.

Rosebush youth survives 25 foot plunge in car crash
Layle Smith seventeen year old grandson of Mr and Mrs Henry G House of near Rosebush miraculously escaped serious injury Sunday afternoon when his car plunged down a twenty five foot embankment. He was helping Alvin Schutt tow a disabled car from Farwell and lost control on a slippery clay road near Wood's Store. The car broke guard posts rolled down the slope and rested right side up. Layle had scratches on head and leg, while Alvin's car sustained minor damage to fenders.

May Crowning at St Henrys Church This Sunday
The annual May Crowning will be held at the 10 30 o clock Mass at St Henrys Church Rosebush US 8 27. G H Greenaway Dies At Home Near Clare
George Henry Greenaway, retired railroad official, died suddenly at his home west of Clare on Saturday evening May 20 1944. Born October 5 1875 in Greersville Ontario he lived in Clare area since 1880 and worked for the Ann Arbor Bay City and Western and other lines. Survived by wife Mary Elizabeth Orr four children five grandchildren one sister and two half siblings. Funeral from Thurston Funeral Home at 2:00 Wednesday with Rev. Harold Watson. interment Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Andrew Kurek Dies in Grant Township Home
Andrew Kurek passed away at his Grant Township home on Wednesday May 17. Born in Poland in 1891 he came to the United States in 1913 and worked in steel mills in Pittsburgh Gary and Chicago before later employment with the Michigan Sugar Company in Clare and finally with the Ann Arbor Railroad Company. He had no immediate relatives in this country. The Thurston Funeral Home conducted services at 2:00 p.m. last Friday with Rev. Chas B. Hohn officiating and interment in Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Clarence Pelton Fined For Taking Nurse's Watch
Clarence Pelton of Clare R-4 was arrested after allegedly taking a nurse's watch at Gladwin hospital. He admitted the theft after witnesses linked him to the recovered watch sent for crystal repair. He pled guilty and received a suspended jail term, probation for two years.

Gottlieb Zinger died Thursday at age eighty three, Ed Rutter near Sheridan township, and Roy Hoover Sr east of Dover. Little Fisherman Catches Big Fish in Clare
Six year old J. P. Ryan of Clare set a youth record by catching an eighteen inch German Brown trout last week and then a twenty two inch rainbow weighing nearly four pounds Monday. He caught both in the swimming pool at the Ryan estate using the bell-ringer bait a cord piece bread. The Sentinel printed the report as evidence of the catch praising the young angler and inviting reports of larger fish.
