Distribution Of State Highway Funds Explained

Highway Commissioner Charles M. Ziegler clarified how fuel levies fund trunk line work. In 1948 the state collected 44.24 million in weight and gas taxes, but only 15.94 million went to the highway department. the rest went to counties and municipalities. The three cent gasoline levy largely funds the department’s operations and fixed charges, with limited surplus for future construction.
