Clare Young Man Seriously Injured in Auto Crash

Thomas Horton nineteen year old son of Mr and Mrs A H Horton was seriously injured when his car collided with a vehicle driven by David Seiter four and a half miles south of Clare on U S 27 near the Mt Pleasant route. He was taken to Brandstetter hospital Mt Pleasant and later to the University hospital Ann Arbor with a fractured pelvis. Seiter suffered only slight bruises.

Twin Elms Golf Course Joins Central Michigan Golf Assn

Twin Elms Golf Course has been voted into the Central Michigan Golf Association at Alma at its annual directors meeting. Alma hosts this year’s tournament on July 25 26 and 27 with Clare and Midland courses joining as new members. Ladies day continues with free play on Wednesdays and reduced daily rates to 25 cents except Sundays and holidays at 50 cents.

Chicken Supper Planned by Brown Corners Ladies

The Brown Corners ladies host a chicken supper at the home of Mr and Mrs Frank Myers in Arthurtownship on Wednesday evening May dist. In a basement discovery Earl Foss uncovered an early Clare business directory printed in fancy colors on a 22x28 card. It lists names and trades such as J. Rockafellow Justice of the Peace and Insurance, W. Perry lawyer, Mason & Parish millinery, The Calkins Hotel, J. H. Wilson tailor, Mason & Boyd groceries, and Dr. T. H. Maynard medical hall among others.

Oil Test Drives Vernon County Prospect to New Height

The Mammoth Petroleum Co test on Marseilles farm in Vernon township, section 23, gushed at a rate near a barrel a minute before settling to about 200 barrels. Gov. Wm A Comstock visited, and promoters note the test as the farthest east in the field. Drilling on several neighboring wells resumes as casing shipments arrive and offsets are planned, signaling Vernon field expansion potential.

Local officials to aid enforcing new beer bill

The State Liquor Control Commission will enforce the beer act to its full extent, allowing only licensed hotels and restaurants to sell beer or wine. The old prohibition as modified remains in force with severe penalties. Clare County officials pledge cooperation with state rules and enforcement.

Poppy Day Proclaimed in Clare for May 27

Clare mayor J J H Wilson proclaims Saturday May 27 as American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Day urging citizens to wear memorial poppies. The proclamation recalls World War I service by Glare county youths and calls for renewed patriotic spirit in peace time.

Local Batters Defeat Evart 13 to 9 in Free-Hitting Show

The Clave high school team beat Evart 13 to 9 in a Friday road game. Lloyd Montgomery launched a two on base home run in the first inning as Clare built a four run start and added eight in the sixth to seize control. Evart answered with three in the first and two more later but Clare held on for the win.

Clare Public School has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools for the period ending April 19, 1944. The association renews this honor yearly and requires the school to meet high standards in facilities, library, laboratories, records, graduation requirements, instruction, salaries, teacher training, and physical education and athletics. Dix and Mrs F C Clapp former President of Gammon Theological Seminary Atlanta were speakers at a Methodist all church affair on Thursday May 18 The Clapps spoke on Sharing with Others and described four years with negro communities noting teachers and professors they met and the seminary as their training ground.

Investigation of Clare County Bank Closed Last Friday

Grand jury in this city concluded its inquiry into the Clare County Savings Bank which closed on May 20 last year. Assistant Attorney General Perry A. Maynard and local prosecutor Theo G. Bowler report twenty seven witnesses, over 2500 pages of testimony, and more than 250 exhibits. They will file findings with the Harrison court clerk around June first.

Isabella Township Farmer Dies Suddenl y

Ira Walton, 42, of three miles west of Rosebush, died suddenly Monday afternoon while visiting at the home of Mrs. Ethel Hendrie in Grant township. He is survived by five sons Elgie Alvie Norris Florin and Dean and many relatives. His wife died about three years ago. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Central church in Rosebush with interment in the village cemetery.

Rapid U S 27 paving north of city advances

Work on U S 27 north of the city is rapidly progressing with concrete laying started last week at the south end of a three mile stretch laid last fall. Clare county men are on the job as Mayor J H Wilson reports fifty eight workers at thirty hours weekly, not counting truck drivers.

Lampheres Return to City and Business Leadership

Mr and Mrs Jesse W Lamphere resume city life and business presence after a year away residing at Lake George. Lamphere now manages the Dixie Villa gas station on east U S 10 with oil grease car washing and prompt service for motorists. He previously ran a tire and shoe repair shop now owned by H J Foster, confirming his return to local enterprise.

Three Centuries Old Musket Shown At Bicknell Store

A 300 year old musket on display at the Wm. H. Bicknell & Co. store draws public interest. The flintlock firearm features a three inch muzzle, a long flared barrel, a horn powder horn. the relic belongs to Spike Horn Myers, longtime wildlife reserve collector north of the city.
