Last White Pine Tree Cut to Six Logs in Local Farm
The last white pine of this area was felled on the Edw. Gilmore farm two miles west of town by tenant Bruce Gingery. The 118 foot tree had a small curve near the top and measured 7 feet 10 inches in circumference. Four legs of 12 feet and two of 14 feet were taken below the first limbs, marking the end of a once famed timber landmark.

John B. Lockyer resigns as Clare County Welfare Director effective May 31 1538 by mutual agreement with the Reginald State Director of Federal Aid Relief. The committee asked the State Welfare department to send a state worker to assume control of the Clare office until circumstances warrant a change. Lockyer remains on staff for some time.

Oil Well Crew Head Injured In Derrick Plunge
T. E. Jamieson 35, superintendent of an oil well casing crew, fell thirty feet from a derrick at Russell No 2 well while running casing. He suffered a broken back and probable internal injuries, was treated at Mt Pleasant and Detroit hospitals, and remained in critical condition.

Assistant Attorney General Ralph Hughes was badly cut and bruised when his car collided with a vehicle driven by F. S. Perrou at a corner where U.S. 27 meets the Gladwin road near the Cornwell ranch. Hughes’ young son was unhurt, and both Perrou's party and the Hughes car sustained damage.

Russell No 2 well proves up as Vernon field producer
The Russell No. 2 well on the Russell farm three miles south and a half west of Clare struck a flow Sunday about noon. The output reached about 62 barrels per hour after 1.5 hours of drilling and the well was kept at partial capacity daily. Hundreds visited the site as the Vernon field appears to extend north and west. Other tests include the Michigan Gas and Oil Co. near Loomis and Currie No. 12 in Vernon. Reports say brine rumors about Russell No. 2 are false.
