The Sentinel announces an early copy and advertisement deadline next week due to Memorial Day. Final want ad and classified copy is Monday at 10 00 am, with printing and mailing on Tuesday afternoon.
Clare Public Schools closed at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday as tornado warnings prompted dismissal. A 12:30 p.m. rainstorm brought heavy rain and hail in spots, followed by sunny skies and strong gusts in the afternoon.
Michigan State Police will extend patrols from noon Tuesday May 29 to midnight Wednesday May 30 with National Guard assistance. The 102 hour weekend had 34 deaths last year, averaging one every three hours. this year the holiday period is 30 hours. Guard will back two man patrols and control posts from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on May 29 and 30.
On Sunday May 27 1962 at 1 p m the Frost Township District No 3 schoolhouse seven miles north of Harrison in Clare county hosts an Old-Timer Reunion called the Renfro Valley of Michigan. Sons and daughters of the Pioneers gather after decades to relive childhood days learning the 3 R's in a rugged bygone era.
A crowd of 150 witnessed Clare Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen Of The Year for ex Mayor Gerald Nivison at the Doherty hotel banquet on Monday. Irish visitor Dermot Honan promoted goodwill while George Romney toured Clare and local media. The program included a special Millpond award for Ken Barnes and a greeting from County Clare officials.
Farwell High School will award diplomas to sixty seniors at a June 1 commencement on the athletic field. Dr. Kenneth Bordine of Central Michigan University will deliver the address titled The Dawn Of A Day. Baccalaureate was May 27 with Rev. C Hiram Gates delivering the sermon. Valedictorian Patricia Coon and salutatorian Ruth Ann Bentley. Class president is Jerry McGraw.
The St Cecilia parish mothers and daughters held their annual May breakfast May 20 at Hotel Doherty. Mrs Paul Lapham led as toastmistress and Miss Connie Murphy and Mrs Ben Tomaski gave toasts to mothers and daughters. Fr Sruba presented the Woman of the Year honor to Mrs Tony Brannigan for her long service to the Home and School Guild. Mrs Lawrence Jackson Jr. chaired the event.
In Clare Womans Bowling Association final standings Drewry's Beer tops with 27 handicap points and 185 pins to win the city championship at Clare Alleys on May 17. Bordens and Ashcrafts Market follow with 25 and 24 points, while team scores include Everts Jewelers and Clare Furniture. Individual highs include F Carncross with a 200 game and 529 series. Drewry's team posts an 815 in hi team game.
The Clare County Board of Supervisors commends the Planning Commission and committees and advisors. It expresses confidence in their work and notes potential adoption of platting standards in the June 1962 session with legal assistance and further study.
Rev. D. R. Salisbury announces the May 27 sermon The Race for Peace. A Memorial Service at 11:00 A M will honor veterans with a color guard from the Army Reserve Clare unit and is open to the public. Susannah Wesley Circle meets Monday at 8:00 P M in the church parlor.
District wide vote on June 11, 1962 will decide how Special Education is administered by the County Board of Education with a 5 member advisory group. The program includes speech correction for 189 students, two visiting teachers for 93 plus pupils, and three Type A rooms for 157 mentally handicapped students.
Senator Harold B. Hughes of Clare announced his bid for re election to the Michigan Senate to represent the 28th District. Since taking office January 10 after a December 11 special election, he has served on State Affairs Municipalities Agriculture and the Tourist Industry Relations Committee.
A three game opening Sunday tied the Little Boys League lead as Tigers Bear and Lions each beat Rams Colts and Cubs. Monday the Bears defeated the Tigers 5 2 to take sole first place and Tuesday the Colts edged the Cubs 5 4 to share the pace.
George Romney toured Clare Michigan meeting residents and promising to work with diverse groups. Accompanied by Circuit Judge Don ald E Holbrook he avoided pledging on a state income tax until a reform program is proposed and argued Lansing’s tax plan could have solved Michigan's finances. He dismissed underdog predictions and asserted he can win the governor’s race.
The Clare FFA chapter held its May 16 meeting to elect officers for 62-63. Larry Pudvay was chosen president with Sam Kushmaul as vice president and Jack Kleinhardt as secretary. Loren Penrose takes treasurer and Greg Brooks becomes reporter, Glen Badgley named sentinel. Officers will attend leadership training camp.
A new miniature golf course named Sportie Golf announces opening dates for Saturday May 26 and Sunday May 27. Located just west of Clare city limits on US 10, the event is advertised with a coupon offering one free round.
