Tornado Warnings Close Clare Public Schools Early

Clare Public Schools closed at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday as tornado warnings prompted dismissal. A 12:30 p.m. rainstorm brought heavy rain and hail in spots, followed by sunny skies and strong gusts in the afternoon.

Memorial Day patrols to boost traffic safety in Michigan

Michigan State Police will extend patrols from noon Tuesday May 29 to midnight Wednesday May 30 with National Guard assistance. The 102 hour weekend had 34 deaths last year, averaging one every three hours. this year the holiday period is 30 hours. Guard will back two man patrols and control posts from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on May 29 and 30.

Old-Timer Reunion At Frost School Draws Ex-Pioneers

On Sunday May 27 1962 at 1 p m the Frost Township District No 3 schoolhouse seven miles north of Harrison in Clare county hosts an Old-Timer Reunion called the Renfro Valley of Michigan. Sons and daughters of the Pioneers gather after decades to relive childhood days learning the 3 R's in a rugged bygone era.

A crowd of 150 witnessed Clare Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen Of The Year for ex Mayor Gerald Nivison at the Doherty hotel banquet on Monday. Irish visitor Dermot Honan promoted goodwill while George Romney toured Clare and local media. The program included a special Millpond award for Ken Barnes and a greeting from County Clare officials.

Farwell High Graduation Set For June First

Farwell High School will award diplomas to sixty seniors at a June 1 commencement on the athletic field. Dr. Kenneth Bordine of Central Michigan University will deliver the address titled The Dawn Of A Day. Baccalaureate was May 27 with Rev. C Hiram Gates delivering the sermon. Valedictorian Patricia Coon and salutatorian Ruth Ann Bentley. Class president is Jerry McGraw.

The St Cecilia parish mothers and daughters held their annual May breakfast May 20 at Hotel Doherty. Mrs Paul Lapham led as toastmistress and Miss Connie Murphy and Mrs Ben Tomaski gave toasts to mothers and daughters. Fr Sruba presented the Woman of the Year honor to Mrs Tony Brannigan for her long service to the Home and School Guild. Mrs Lawrence Jackson Jr. chaired the event.
