The 1942 War Fund Campaign to support United Service Organizations begins Monday in Clara County with nationwide plans. President Roosevelt urges unified, generous support to sustain the men at war and uphold democratic values.
County leaders organize a two day drive on May 11 and 12 to secure pledges for War Bonds and Stamps. U S Treasury names Donald E Holbrook as county chairman with urban executive chairmen in Clare Parnell and Harrison townships. County War Board members outline township canvassing teams and leadership to cover all areas.
Next Sunday morning a Mother's Day worship service will be held at the First Congregational Church. The senior and junior choirs will perform special music and the pastor will give a short address on the subject Is That Is. It is hoped all members and friends will attend with family.
One hundred Michigan high school seniors were named Alumni Undergraduate Scholars for the next academic year at the University of Michigan. Barbara Caple of Clare was among the recipients announced by Dean C S Yoakum, university vice president for educational investigations and dean of the Rackham School.
May term opens with Judge Ray Hart presiding. Criminal items include The People vs. Bob Stager and Walter Hergenrother for breaking and entering, Paul Oakley and Lynes Oakley for removing mortgaged property, John Burts for forgery. Estate and property disputes cover ejectments and attachments among others. A chancery bill to quiet title and a divorce request appear in the calendar.
Ruth Parent announces May 23 as Poppy Day with volunteers distributing memorial poppies citywide. Proceeds fund aid for disabled veterans of both wars and families in need, reflecting twenty years of Legion Auxiliary service and the push to expand relief amid ongoing conflict.
Local officials and community leaders gathered at Traverse City to discuss home defense readiness. Civilian Defense training begins Monday evenings at Clare city hall from 7:00 to 11:00 with instructors, covering air raid and emergency housing roles, registration work next week, and encouraging all ages to enroll for protection of homes and families.
The Clare County Home Economics Extension Groups met at Clare city hall on May 6 for their Achievement Day program. The gathering opened with the flag salute and the Star Spangled Banner. Speakers included Ina Mary Young on Health and the War and Miriam Eads from Michigan State College.
Clare Kiwanis teams competed in Traverse City Sunday with Kiwanis No 2 winning the team event and Kiwanis No 1 finishing third. Leo Hampton swept singles and all events, with Hampton and Harold Fleming taking second in doubles. Tim Cotter was fourth in singles.
State Police will show a motion picture on incendiary bombs and methods of combating this menace followed by an actual marksmanship demonstration at Claré High School auditorium Thursday evening May 21. The two hour program promises entertainment and safety lessons with further details to be published next week.
All persons with knitting are urged to turn in as soon as possible. If not completed, contact Mrs. Stuart Bicknell about new yarn. Experienced knitters are invited to assist in this effort for the Red Cross.
Ward Coulson fifteen year old son of Mr and Mrs D J Coulson was badly cut in the face Friday evening while playing near the McEwan street business district. He ran under a barbed wire gap in a fence and struck his nose requiring thirty one stitches. He was treated by Dr Kuno Hammerberg and is recovering with most stitches out.
The second annual Mother and Daughter Banquet of the Congregational Sunday School was held Tuesday evening at 7:00 in the church parlors with 150 attending. Programs featured mother and daughter selections, solos, duets, and tributes, as Rev Dawe oversaw kitchen duties and Mrs Garthe presided as toastmaster.
The derrick machinery and pump house at the Brief well four and three quarters miles southwest of Clare were destroyed by fire Friday morning. Firefighters used large lines and a pumper to control the blaze. New equipment is expected to be erected and the well pumped again.
The Navy Relief Society, formed to aid sailors widows and orphans, seeks funds nationwide as wartime needs grow. It provides immediate grants, ongoing support, and interest free loans to Navy families, with Secretary Knox noting heightened casualties at Pearl Harbor and expanding service alongside the Navy and Coast Guard.
The Clare County Rationing Board issued lists from April 17 to May 1 1942 granting tire and tube allocations. Recipients include farmers oil field workers and tradesmen in Harrison Clare and Farwell with varied car tire retread and tube allowances. Sugar ration stamps 1 to 4 apply one pound per stamp during May 1942 and late May to early June 1942 periods.
The Clare County Red Cross Chapter holds its regular monthly meeting in the Farwell library on Monday evening May 11 at 8 00 pm. Unit chairmen must bring monthly reports and may send reports to county chairman Madge B Lamb if unable to attend. All Red Cross members urged to attend and hear current activities.
Clare's newly elected Mayor N. L. Tibbits read the annual list to the Common Council. Appointments include City Attorney Donald E. Holbrook and Fire Chief Albert Haley. Committees are named and the slate was confirmed with the flag donation and garbage contract awarded.
The Clare Kiwanis Club met at Hotel Doherty with dinner at 6 30. James Rawley of Clare High School spoke on current events and future prospects of nations. Mrs Mabel Mulder urged War Bonds and Stamps purchases. Six pledge teams will canvass Clare business places.
A head on collision four miles north of Harrison at 6 30 Sunday evening left one woman dead and three others badly hurt. John Schaefer 64 of Merrill died at Clare Hospital from a fractured skull. King Blackledge 54 of Frost township and Roy Henry also injured. Sheriff Amble said cause not yet determined.
Ladies Bowling League held a banquet at Barnes Cafe with Cotter Motor Bales winning James Stanley Championship pins for a team including Jean Cradit and Dorothy Koch. Edith Cain and Frances Anderson received 200 Club pins while Cotter’s captured most prize money. InterCity League followed with banquet at Dunlop Cafe, Clare Recreation winning top games and George Wisler earning a loving cup for high score.
The Department of Conservation has delivered pheasant eggs for spring setting. Eligible applicants must provide a suitable setting and pledge to raise and release birds in fall. Eggs available from Henry Doll at Thayers' Dairy while supplies last.
