Drowning Victim Harvey Coffey Recovered From Houghton Lake
The body of Harvey Coffey of Flint was recovered from Houghton Lake on Thursday afternoon April 22 by conservation officer Thos White. Coffey was drowned on November 10 1936 while fishing with Hineat Hopkins of Flint whose body was found last fall after the overturned boat was sighted by an airplane. The search had been called off last November due to weather and ice. Coffey’s body washed ashore near Geisel's landing, the departure point of the two fishermen.

School Census 10 to Be Taken in Near Future

Residents and ages of children will be reported as of May 31. A. H. Horton, patient at Clare County General Hospital, had his foot amputated after a 48 80 deer rifle discharged while he cleaned it. The bullet shattered bones, and Horton, alone during the incident, reported severe blood loss before a doctor arrived. By Thursday afternoon he rested somewhat easier.

Our Achievement program on April 28 drew a large crowd and a pleasant evening. Handicraft sessions on May 5 at Mrs. Newman in Gilmore and May 7 at Mrs. Lena Davison of Farwell featured handicraft and a pot luck dinner. Outdoor sports will start soon with croquet, fishing, swimming and picnicking led by Mina Van, Buskirk Recreation Leader of West Grant, Gilmore and German Settlement.

Clare to Dedicate New Post Office With Banquet and Dance
The Clare Chamber of Commerce will formally dedicate the new United States Post Office Friday afternoon May 14. At 1 pm the flag raising and building dedication will occur with high level postal officials and speeches by prominent state and national figures. An evening banquet at 7 pm at the Clare Community Building features Howard G Johnston as toastmaster and Donald H Holbrook as chamber president. Barnes Cafe provides the banquet with tickets at one dollar. The night closes with a dance, and Francis Jackson notes moving into the new quarters is a big boost for Clare. The chamber plans to publish a full program in next week’s Sentinel.

Benjamin Wood, 17, of Gilmore township, was badly injured when starting a tractor in gear at his father's farm near Wood's store. The engine lurched forward, crushing and breaking bones in his leg. He was rushed to Clare Cove General Hospital for several weeks of confinement.
