May 1 to 15 1945 local citizens will visit all Clare county establishments serving beer wine or hard liquor to ensure posting of brand kind serving size and price as part of the War Price and Rationing Board effort to curb inflated prices.
Clare High School captured its fifth straight Regional Speech trophy as Phyllis Ogle won dramatic declamations with Mickeys Marker at the Clare auditorium. Pat Hall placed second in oration They Also Serve, close to first Leonard Moeller of Standish. Lucille Williams of White Cloud took second in dramatic declamations. James Cavanaugh of St. Louis earned Regional honors in extempore speaking.
Rural schools near Harrison and surrounding areas are urged to donate clothing for the United National Clothing Collection for War Relief. Bring items to the Court House by Saturday afternoon or on Achievement Day next Tuesday for sorting and packing. In Clare, contributions may be left at Bob's Garage or Crequer's Harness Shop by Saturday. Clare churches are asked to hold clothing until shipping instructions arrive in a few days.

The Michigan Education Association of Clare Isabella District met May 1 at Clare High School with 40 members enjoying a pot luck in the Home Economics room. Isabella county members joined. officers for Clare county were elected and addressed by guest speaker William Otto, Lansing Chamber of Commerce secretary.
The Women’s Bowling League held its annual banquet at the Hotel Doherty with eight teams present. President Mrs Elea Nor Lehr praised the year and led the group in song while presenting captains and recognizing program entertainment including readings, baton twirling, a tap dance, and music performances from league members.
The State Department issued a pictorial wall chart outlining the Dumbarton Oaks international organization proposal. It will be widely distributed and displayed by national and local agencies, with the American Red Cross sharing in distribution. A chart is shown in Clare county Red Cross headquarters window for public viewing.
Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club will sponsor the Clare Rotary Club charter presentation at Clare High School next Wednesday evening May 9 with a banquet at 7. Charlies B. Park, Mt. Pleasant president, will preside. Charles L. Anspach will toastmaster. Kim Sigler of Lansing, linked to graft investigations, will be the speaker. District Governor Ralph Brotherton will present the charter. Attendance limited to Rotarians and invited guests.
Local War Price and Rationing Board announces canning sugar for 1944 season starting May 1. Households mail applications with Sparé Stamp 13 from War Ration Book Four for each family member. forms available at the Court House Harrison Michigan or by mail. Applications accepted until October 31. Approved applicants receive five and one pound coupons and must sign and include War Ration Book Four numbers at the store. Sugar is limited to actual need up to 15 pounds per person and 120 pounds per family. No stamps from ration books will be valid for canning sugar this year.
S/Sgt Arthur Wade missing in action since February 14. S/Sgt John Fa bin of Rosebush wounded in Germany with shrapnel to face. Pfc Elton R Allen of Clare wounded in Germany on April 14. Warren Hinkle of Fordville wounded in Okinawa and aboard a fleet hospital ship. Pfc Ronald D Shaver of Lansing wounded by shell fragment in France near the German border. County families report these war injuries and losses as April notices arrive.
Mrs. Wm. Elliott ages eighty eight on April 17 leads five generations of Pitts descendants in a family gathering at the Bouchey residence on Dunlop road. The sequence includes her daughter Adna Perry aged sixty seven, her granddaughter-in-law Jack Bouchey’s wife aged forty nine, and great granddaughter Nelson Calkins’ baby, with the eldest great great grandchild born February 12, 1945. Mrs. Elliott, born Josephine Hale in New York, moved to Michigan with her family where she and four sons established roots in Nottawa township. she remains healthy and active in daily tasks and Sunday School.
Bowler announces Twin Elms Golf Course will begin its twelfth season next Sunday May 6. The greens are in fine winter shape with bentgrass growth and fairways being prepared for opening day. Mr and Mrs Sherman Moran manage the clubhouse serving meals and lunches. public invited and members urged to attend to plan the season.
Joyce Ann Bennett, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert H Bennett of Mann Siding, born April 21, died April 28 in Saginaw General Hospital at seven days old. Survived by parents seven siblings Viola June George Tom Howard Eva and David. brother Pfc Robert M Bennett killed in action in Germany December 16. Funeral at Fanning Funeral Home Harrison conducted by Rev Chas Kleinhardt. Burial Maple Grove Cemetery Harrison.
The American Legion hosts a dance at Clare city hall on Saturday May 5 with dancing from 9:00 to 12:00 featuring a good dance orchestra. Admission is one dollar for a couple and fifty cents for an extra lady.

Charles Fundy Van Den Bergh, longtime Grant township resident and Sunday School Superintendent at Dover Tabernacle, died suddenly at his farm home after a heart attack. Born August 1, 1871 in Victor New York, he lived in Felton Alma Saginaw and St Louis before settling near Clare. He served as township treasurer and AAA commissioner and helped build Dover Tabernacle. Interment was in Cherry Grove Cemetery after services at Dover.
Clare Community Council met at the Clare City Library with Chairman Emil Pfister presiding. May events listed include Rotary Club weekly lunches, Charter Night at the High School, Lansing Masons visiting Clare High School, a senior trip, senior vesper services, Kiwanis weekly meetings, and city hall use for youth activities.
