A fishing trip ended in a wreck two miles north of the Farwell hotel when Guy Mercer’s borrowed Buick left the road. Mrs Mercer, Guy Jr., and Clifford Powers were treated at Clare Hospital for facial injuries and ribs. Wm Corrie suffered head injuries from a falling chain hoist at Martin Loomis Machine Shop. Night Officer John Hanley slipped on wet steps at the city hall, leading to a hospital admission. Continued on page seven.

Women Golfers Start Season in Spite of Weather
Clare's Women Golfers opened their 1947 season with a breakfast at the Country Club on April 30. Forty six members attended as new players joined. Mrs. Bowler welcomed everyone and introduced Mrs. Haley who outlined the schedule and the Central Michigan Tournament in Ithaca. Twenty four golfers teed off in threesomes despite poor weather, with others playing bridge. The group plans to meet May 7 at ten in the morning with a luncheon, and a collection was taken for Mrs. Tim Frey in the hospital.

Reverend Powe Named New Congregational Pastor in Clare
Reverend William Powe becomes the new resident minister of the First Congregational Church in Clare. He was sent by the Michigan Conference after receiving a call in March and will lead his first Sunday service May 4. He is a retired Army lieutenant colonel with wartime service in Europe. The Clare Methodist Church Board met in the church auditorium on Monday evening for a regular business session. Rev. Charles Halin opened with remarks on Stewardship in the Crusade for Christ and offered a prayer. Officers and committees reported and were accepted. The board voted to cover part of youths’ summer camp expenses and to create a merit system for next year. Firemen Answer Two Alarms Here Last Saturday
The Clare Fire Department responded to two alarms on Saturday to fight a garage fire at 2 45 pm on East Fifth Street at the Harry Foss property occupied by Mr and Mrs Freeman Mitchel. The blaze caused heavy damage before extinguished. A grass fire near Vandewarker store on North McEwan Street at 6 30 pm threatened the wildlife preserve east of the building and was put out.
