The Michigan United Conservation Clubs held their April meeting in Clare from April 18 to 20 with sessions at the Hotel Doherty. Officials from multiple regions and many city directors attended, along with guest speakers from state agencies and colleges, as the gathering showcased sportsmen and tourist interests across Michigan.
Clare County's 1947 Red Cross Roll Call raised 1081.03 toward a 1040 quota under campaign chair George J. Lehr. Contributions came from Clare City 753.75 Farwell 64.50 Harrison 233.78 various townships 5.00 to 12.00. drive closed due to road conditions. mail any further gifts to Mrs. Harold Fleming, Clare Michigan.
Leo Russell longtime employee and store manager at Farmers Independent Produce Company resigns to take a new post May 1 at Ray Dillenbach Drug Store in Weidman after purchasing the business. Harl Foss named successor, recently from Clare bakery work, starts duties immediately.
A Clare campaign launched Tuesday morning by 22 volunteers at the Doherty Hotel with Harold Hughes opening and Dr. McArthur speaking on county unit importance. Joe Motel of the Cancer Society shared cancer control facts and Mrs. Willard Bicknell distributed materials as the drive topped its county quota by noon.
Dr. Robi Flood endorses a Saturday Evening Post piece by Harold Titus from April 19, 1947, page 38. He urges Health District No. 7 citizens to read it to understand state and county health department efforts for public health.
Clare women golfers begin their season at Clare Country Club with an opening day breakfast on April 30. Mrs. Lucile Haley announced the event and Mrs. Eleanor Moran is handling reservations by April 29. Breakfast served at 10:00 a.m with bridge planned if weather prevents golf.
The Clare Rebekahs sponsor an old time dance at 1.0.C.F. hall on May 2. Admission is 50 cents per person. Lunch served. 3012 Committees.
A church fish supper is slated for next Wednesday night April 30 at Colonville Church. Tickets are 75 cents. Proceeds support church programs.
Elizabeth Jane Morton Gleason, born November 3 1854 in Three Rivers Michigan, died Sunday April 18 after living in Clare County and Bay City with husband William C Gleason. Survived by daughter Helen King son Edward and Jesse deceased. four grandchildren three great grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral held Hyatt Funeral Home Bay City with burial at Cherry Grove Clare. infant Mark Roby and great great grandson James Roby noted in report.
About 200 airport managers and private pilots in Michigan received invitations to attend the Dawn Patrol trip to Houghton Lake on May 4. The event includes a 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. breakfast at two The Heights hotels, a 10:00 a.m. program at The Heights Inn with awards for oldest and youngest flyers, and longest distance. The Michigan Aeronautics Commission officials are invited, and spectators can visit the field in the afternoon to watch arrivals and departures.
The St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Ladies’ Aid Society of Clare will sponsor a Family Night in the church parlors on Wednesday April 30. Dinner is served at 7 00 p m followed by program and social gathering. All members and friends are invited.
The newly elected and appointed officers of the V F W Auxiliary were installed at a special meeting on Tuesday evening April 22 in Clare City Hall. Mrs Blanche Fall as installing officer and Mrs Sue Greenleaf presided at the piano. Past president Donald Holbrook received her pin. The officers include Geneva Pearson president Esta Hendershot senior vice Henrietta Verette junior vice Mae McCann treasurer Charlotte Lyons secretary Doris Ackerman chaplain Neenah Urquhart conductress Sadie Ogle patriotic instructor Betty Scott guard Marjory Burdo historian Theresa Weichman banner bearer Mary Hemstreet flag bearer Bonita White Evelyn Breen Juanita Green Dorothy Maxwell colorbearers. A social hour followed with refreshments served by Pearson and Holbrook.
The Lester Daley family home two miles south and a quarter mile east of Clare burned to the ground at 4 30 PM due to a stove explosion. A Daley child sustained facial burns while the fire department, delayed by other calls, could not reach the scene in time. The fire coincided with the couple’s wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Donald Richardson thanks Clare County citizens for Easter Seals purchases aiding crippled children. From start to April 21 contributions totaled 441.16 with half kept by the Clare County Society. The Clare school under Mrs. Leota Van Every netted 15.54. sixth grade led by Miss Gerow. Carrow school, led by Mrs. Iya Strouse, tops rural schools. donations still welcomed.
A social event is planned for Saturday night April 26 at Lake Town Hall to raise funds for the local cemetery. The program includes dancing and entertainment for attendees.
At a council meeting the city plans a police car with two way radio and gear and to expand the force with a chief and two assistants to provide 24 hour protection. The resignation of a constable was accepted and a new appointee approved. Also a resort liquor license was granted for bowling alleys with conditions.
David Clark Walters, son of Mr and Mrs Clark Walters, born September 4 1940 in Hatton Township Clare County Michigan, died April 17 1947 at age six years seven months two days after being struck by a southbound car. He loved school and play, and spoke of loving Jesus and Heaven as his final destination. He is mourned by family including his parents sister Nellie brother Douglas grandparents and many relatives and friends. Continues on Page twelve.
H. H. Smart and H. H. Smart Jr. of Pontiac died in a New Jersey crash while en route to a plumbing school. The elder Smart was a licensed pilot who flew in the war for C.P.A. and his son served in the U. S. Navy. Mrs. Morgan, sister-in-law, accompanied the bodies to Clare and Pontiac for funeral arrangements.
Two traffic accidents near Clare injured eight people. In the first crash on M-115, DeBlanna Downey and Willard Sneary were involved. Sneary and several passengers were treated and released, with a summons for no operator’s license issued to Sneary. A second collision on US-27 near Rosebush left Beatrice Lind and Cora Fraim bruised. all involved were treated at Clare Hospital or Central Michigan Community Hospital. State Police investigated both incidents.
Marion Sanderson of Leota was arrested on a People complaint and arraigned before Justice Sam Wilkin Jr. He waived examination, bound over to Circuit Court, and is expected to be tried at the May term. He is remanded to the county jail to await trial.
Tomorrow is the day for collection of papers books magazines and cartons on the front porch this Saturday April 26. The drive is sponsored jointly by Clave Boy Scouts and Clare Study Club with Mrs. Austin S Bates as chairman urging patriotic cooperation.
An initial committee met at the Hotel Doherty Lounge to organize the Annual Four County Dairy Day with leaders from Clare Gladwin Midland and Isabella counties. The event will be June 17 at City Tourist Park with a cattle show consignment sale exhibits entertainment and educational talks by MSU dairy specialists.
Clare High School F F A boys demonstrated parliamentary procedures at a Rotary meeting on Wednesday noon. Floyd Norcutt supervised the session and outlined how the subject aids rural students in leadership and civic meeting skills. Earl Ruby was Rotary sponsor. Dr Medrthar announced April 29 as the trip date to Merrill to present a Rotary pennant to the newly chartered club.
