Dr Born Elected New President of Business Group

The Claré Chamber of Commerce annual meeting in the Wedgewood Room at Hotel Doherty saw Dr Born elected president amid a steak dinner. New members introduced included Ralph Cole, Herb Van Hoose, L. H. Marsh, Fred Guiette and others, with Mayor Hugh Johnston delivering a call to active participation and service to the city.

Proposed Clare Charter Appears This Week

The charter commission urges residents to study and vote yes on the new Clare charter at the April 5 city election. If adopted, an May 10 election will choose the first city commission under the home rule government.

Coleman Wins District C Title in Tournament

Coleman basketball team, previously beaten by Harrison and Clare, upset rivals in district play at Mt. Pleasant, winning 37 36 in the final seconds to claim the district crown and a shot at St Peter and Pauls in the regional tourney. Beaverton topped Farwell 38 34. Coleman then beat Beaverton 37 36 in OT for a second one point win. MoreUpsets Evart defeated Reed City 34 18. Ithaca beat St Louis 43 42 but Edmore won 45 84 to claim the district championship and a regional bid. Tourists urged to mind courteous behavior in Clare.

Gas Company Seeks Temporary Rate Hike Amid Shortage

The Michigan Consolidated Gas Company petitions the Michigan Public Service Commission for a temporary rate increase due to nationwide gas and petroleum shortages. The plan covers several districts and ties to a forthcoming Texas to Michigan pipeline, with rates adjusted until supply stabilizes. A hearing is scheduled in Lansing on March 24.

Calistia Scott Dies At Lake Home After Long Illness

Calistia Katie Porter Scott, born November 27, 1877 in White House Ohio, died at her Lake home on March 2 1948 at 9 16 pm aged 70 years 3 months 4 days. She and Darius Scott married 1896 had eleven children and twenty eight grandchildren. Funeral held at the Lakg town hall with Elder Pendleton presiding.

Henry I Six dies at 89 in Michigan farm area

Henry I Six, 89, died February 25 at Meadow Brook farm near Bellaire. Born October 15, 1859 in Lakeville Indiana, he married Ida Mae Tanner February 24 1883. Survived by six sons, two daughters, two sisters, forty four grandchildren and fifty three great grandchildren. Funeral held Berg funeral home Kalkaska with burial in Oliver Township Cemetery. Reverend Williams officiated.

Haag Fatally Injured Near Charlotte After Car Crash

Francis C Haag 37 of R-2 Farwell died after his 1941 Chevrolet struck a telephone pole near the Charlotte municipal airport. Firemen freed him from under the steering wheel after the car caught fire. Haag died at Hayes-Green Beach hospital at 12 16 am Saturday. He left a widow three sons and two daughters. The sheriff’s department investigated and noted erratic driving from a hill near Fairview school. The Haag family lived four miles west of Clare where they ran a service station and restaurant.

Bob Kelsey Sets Clare Bowling Record With 267

Bob Kelsey shattered Clare Bowling Alley single game record with a 267 on Wednesday. He started with a spare after a blank first frame and then rolled nine consecutive strikes in the final game of the series, surpassing former holder Jimmie Whitmore of North Bradley who had a 265 last September.

Deaths Burley Shaver Resident Near Brown Corners

Burley Shaver died Saturday afternoon at an advanced age at the home of his nephew Albert Shaver near Brown Corners where he had lived the past few months. Survived by two daughters Mrs. Win Prag of Ann Arbor and Mrs. Glenn Tritey of Detroit, a sister Mrs. Anna Kendall of San Diego, California, and many relatives and friends. The remains were taken to the home of Mrs. Sem True at Ann Arbor Monday.

John Schultz longtime Clare resident dies at Community Hospital Mt. Pleasant after a week of illness. Born August 21 1897 he married Fannie Corbin in 1927 and had two daughters Lorraine and Sandra. He served as custodian at Clare Public School and Clare Methodist Church. Interment Cherry Grove cemetery.

Man Threatens City Police With Loaded Rifle

Police investigated a residence altercation at the corner of Dunlop Road and Maple Street. Cecil Lindberg threatened officers with a loaded 30 M1 carbine while restraining his wife and children, slapping her as she left. Lindberg was arrested, arraigned for felonious assault, and held on $300 bond. Nearby, Frederick and Elmer Bond were arrested for illegal deer killing and possession.
