Mrs. Louise Waller Dies in Clare Michigan Hospital

Louise Weeks Waller longtime Mendon native and Clare resident died at Clare Hospital after six months of declining health. She taught in local schools from 1892 and married Edward H Waller in 1892. six children were born, two survive. Funeral held at Thurston Funeral Home with burial in Cherry Grove cemetery.

Rural fire truck demonstration postponed to March 8

The rural fire truck demonstration scheduled for Tuesday at the Vernon town hall was postponed due to inclement weather and will now be held Monday afternoon March 8. All Vernon and surrounding township residents are urged to attend.

Farm and Home Safety Meeting Planned in Clare

Clare county 43 Clubs and Home Economs Extension groups plan a safety program at Clare High School auditorium on Wednesday March 10 at 2 p m. Panel displays moving pictures and discussions led by Fred Roth aim to reduce farm and home accidents. Public urged to attend. Health data show half of home accidental deaths from falls and 39 percent of farm home deaths from falls.

Alimony default lands Raymond Smith in jail

Raymond Smith of Isabel la county faced Judge Donald E. Holbrook on a writ of attachment for alimony nonpayment totaling 1160 dollars. The court ordered 580 dollars paid in three monthly installments, with Smith jailed until the first payment and then under a 500 dollar bond to cover the remainder. Other local cases include Floyd Walters fined 25 dollars for disorderly conduct and two speeding-related fines for West Semig and John Battles Jr. Local thefts involved highly octane gasoline from four airplanes at City Airport, with no arrests. The town plans John Deere Day at Brewer's Implement Store in Clare on Tuesday March 9.

Blizzard Paralyzes Traffic and Closes Schools First of the Week

A weekend storm battered Michigan with sleet and snow causing widespread road closures and power outages. The U S Weather Bureau logged rivers high and counties reported drifting snow and delayed bus routes while Clare Public Schools largely stayed open. Passenger trains faced delays but service continued as routes recovered from the blizzard conditions.

Clare DeMolay Quintet Seeks State DeMolay Title

The Clare DeMolay basketball team defeated Midland 66 to 25 to clinch the seventh district championship and earn a berth in the state DeMolay tournament at Benton Harbor later this month. Bill Chaffe led with 19 points, Jersey Joslin 16, Bob Perry 10, while Carey topped Midland with 10. A scheduled game with Flint was forfeited, with talks of a return against Bay City and Owosso later.

Mrs. Darius Scott died at her Lake home on Tuesday evening March 2. The funeral will be held Friday at 2:00 PM at Leake town hall. An obituary will be published next week.

Work Here Clare Pastors Plan Religious Education Classes

A special meeting of the Clare pastors planned Religious Education classes in local churches from March 8 during 3:00 to 4:00 pm for two weeks. Students will be excused from school for the hour and each church will run its own program with records kept at school and church. The Clare County Ministerial Association meets March 9 at 7:30 pm at the Baptist church, open to the public at 8:00.

Loomis Machine Company Builds Large Rotary Machinery

The Loomis Machine Company in this city built a 68 foot long 7 foot 6 inch diameter 75 ton rotary machine for a Midland firm. The unit weighs 65 tons with rest hauled separately and was moved before completion due to spring load restrictions. McNally & Davis Cartage loaded and erected it. Win. J. Muehlenbeck hauled it to Midland under a state permit with police escort.

Clare Pioneer Mrs Murdoch Dies After Illness

Mrs Josephine Murdoch a Clare early citizen dies after pneumonia lasting over ten weeks at her son Frank’s residence on Hemlock Street. Born Mary Josephine Callum in 1866 near Tillisonburg Canada she became a local authority on pioneer happenings and married John Jack Murdoch in 1885. She leaves eight children seven living, eight grandchildren, and mourns daughter Heatrice and sons Edwin and Lyle. Funeral at Congregational Church with Eastern Star rites and burial in Cherry Grove cemetery.
