Fertilizer trials show high wheat yield gains in Michigan fields
Field trials across 18 Michigan farms indicate nitrogen and phosphoric acid applications significantly raise wheat yields. Fifty pounds of nitrogen and twenty pounds of phosphate yielded the best returns, with fertilizer costs recouped many times over. Results vary by county and soil, with nitrogen boosting yields when phosphate is low and phosphorus enhancing output at moderate nitrogen levels. The study, funded by the Tennessee Valley Authority, involved MSU soil science and agricultural economics researchers.
