Dutch Youth Returns Home to Recover From Illness

Pierre Vergonet from Holland, an international exchange student in Farwell, must cut his stay due to a respiratory infection. He will fly to New York Monday for the journey home after treatment in Mt Pleasant and Ann Arbor hospitals.

School Waits Permission To Sell Bonds Votes Move Forward

Progress toward construction of a new school facility is under way after the January 27 vote. The Board of Education has started legal steps to raise funds, awaiting approval from the State Municipal Finance Commission to sell bonds. Approval is expected in three to four weeks. The architect is preparing preliminary plans for review with the Citizens Advisory Committee. Final plan acceptance will occur when the district’s needs align with advisory group expectations. The February meeting addressed elementary report cards. March will continue discussion. The board also approved contracts for teachers on the current salary schedule. Regular monthly meetings are open to the public, held on the second Monday.

Snowbound Roads Force School Closures in Clare Region

Snow piled and drifted, closing area roads and dragging out school recesses. Clare Superintendent Richard Wheeler said buses cannot run, and roads cannot be reopened for Monday. This week marks the ninth day of snow disruptions this winter, with February 12 17 noted as the first full week since before Christmas without a weather break.

White's Greenhouse to Focus on Nursery and Landscaping Center

White's Greenhouse and Nursery announced it will drop the cut flower business on March 1 to devote more time to the nursery and landscaping operation. The former greenhouse, 3,000 square feet, will become a modern garden center under glass with a small propagation house and a garden supply shop offering fertilizers insecticides tools and potted plants.

Farwell High School held its inaugural Career Day last Thursday with 30+ resource speakers from trades professions and services meeting 10th to 12th graders.
