Red Cross Sets 1946 Clare County Campaign Leaders

John C. Primus announces Pearl W. Pidd as chairwoman and George Lehr as co chair for Clare County Red Cross fund drive. Local quota is 2860 with 40.6 percent kept by Clare County chapter and 59.4 percent sent to national fund. National Red Cross activities include services to occupation forces hospitalized veterans and veterans services intensified after VE and VI Day.

Mt Pleasant Kiwanis hosts guests at Wednesday dinner

The Clare Kiwanis Club met at Hotel Doherty for a 6:30 dinner with President Austin Bates presiding. Entertainment included songs, a tap dance, vocal numbers, piano duets and trumpet solos performed by local members and guests. Inter club meeting brought thirty Kiwanians from Mt Pleasant and Clare guests.

Clare Youth Center discussed at community council meeting

The Clare Community Council met at the City Library on February 21 with representatives from PTA Odd Fellows Rebekahs Methodist Church Boy Scouts Student Council and the Rehabilitation Office. The group reviewed Rotary committee progress on a Clare Youth Center and planned a school meeting to involve more residents in funding and support. The next council meeting is set for March 21.

George Fitzpatrick's Hen Cackles Loudly

George Fitzpatrick of Clare R-2 brought a large hen to the Sentinel office amid garbled notes. The bird reportedly measured eight and five sixteenths inches around the long way and six and three quarters inches in circumference. One White Rock is credited with aiding this effort to lay bigger and better eggs.

Ideal Theatre to Install New Seats Next Week

The Ideal Theatre will be closed Monday and Tuesday March 4 and 6 to install modern seats. Management apologizes for the lapse in programing and promises improved comfort and service. It reopens Wednesday March 6 with Yolanda and the Thief and resumes regular schedule.

Clare Pioneers Draw Sacred Heart in District Tourney

Clare High School fell 28-25 to Gladwin in a tight Friday game as the Pioneers, averaging over 30 points per game, failed to convert key chances. The loss leaves Clare at 9-6 on the season and leads to a district opener against Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart at Central Michigan College gymnasium in Mt. Pleasant next Thursday at 4:00 PM with subsequent games set Friday and Saturday.

Dex Elden Joins Sentinel Staff in Clare

Dex Elden, a Clare native and 1931 Clare High School graduate, becomes a member of The Sentinel staff. He built a career in retail management before serving 27 months in the U.S. Marine Corps, including time in Hawaii Iwo Jima and Japan. The Elden family will remain in Clare with their daughter Katherine.

Polio Campaign Successful in Clare County

The 1946 fund drive for the Clare County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis raised 474.34 dollars with half to the county fund and half to the national foundation. County chair Mrs. Fenton Ware and treasurer Mrs. Laurence Jackson led the effort involving several local organizations and businesses.

Clara McGinnis longtime Farwell resident dies at home

Mrs. Clara McGinnis aged eighty four died at her Farwell home on a Monday in February 1946. Born Clara Cowling in 1861 in New York State she lived in Sheridan Marion and finally Farwell where she married James McGinnis. Survived by son Oscar Peterson of Ann Arbor grandsons Dr Victor Peterson and J R Peterson great grandchildren and a Lansing sister. Funeral held in Clare with Rev E C Redman officiating and burial in Greenwood Cemetery Marion.
