The Sentinel plans to print reduced size issues July 6 and 13 during a building move to a larger press. Legal ads and Want Ads will appear, while shoppers see bargain values on pages 3 6 and 16 and Clare's displays on pages 2 5 and 10. Full-size issues aim for July 20 return with thanks to advertisers and readers.
Curtis Elbert Thomas a Clare businessman for ten years was laid to rest after funeral services at Stephenson Funeral Home. He died June 18 1961 in Saginaw General Hospital of lung cancer. He was born September 29 1892 in Graves County Kentucky and leaves a wife Mary a son Kenneth three brothers and many friends.
A Tuesday afternoon cyclone struck Him Grove area on June 26 causing severe farm damage. Mrs. Arthur Dull first spotted the funnel. Joseph Keinrath’s barn was destroyed and scattered stones. Ralph Haywood’s house and another farm home were torn from foundations as the cyclone moved toward Gladwin. Damage estimates pending.
In a county softball doubleheader Clare Mfg. fell to third after losses by league leader DeMolay. Farwell rallied for a five run seventh inning in Friday's twilight game as Bill Moore and Elton Marshall drove in three runs apiece. The nightcap saw B and B overcome a Dover comeback to win 15-8 with Carn cross tossing six shutout innings for Dover before B and B's bats heated up.
A patriotic call urges displaying the national flag on the Fourth of July to honor veterans and uphold good citizenship. It praises the Stars and Stripes as a symbol exalted by sacrifices of servicemen and patriots at home and abroad.
The long awaited day has come as US-27 through Clare opens to traffic. A sewer under the C and O tracks caused a delay due to quicksand and sand cave causing 72 feet of 8 inch pipe obstruction. Paving work by L. W. Edison crews progressed on McEwan Street with sections near Nazaren Church and Callihan garage, and 33 feet of paving on South McEwan was expected to cure enough to reopen by Thursday night.
Francis L. Cappaert of Vicksburg Mississippi son of Mrs Bertha Cappaert leads a new company the M System Inc which has bought the manufacturing interests of M System Trailer Manufacturing Co of Vicksburg The firm lists assets of 500000 and will manufacture house trailers Cappaert previously served as plant superintendent at M System for several years
The body of Cpl James A Reeder of Clare will be shipped from Brooklyn to Reed City for a Thursday morning arrival. He was missing in Korea since July 1950 and later officially declared killed in action July 16 1950. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 3 PM from the Clare Congregational Church with Rev Oscar W Olson officiating and military honors to be given at Cherry Grove Cemetery.
Clare High School Chanter of Future Farmers of America exhibited 27 head at Clare Tourist Park on Thursday June 21. Ted Hoersch led the Hereford herd as top exhibitor with a 990 pound fat market steer. Hereford and Holstein champions were named for beef and dairy classes, with Lyle Bates and Walter Bay taking reserve titles. Mike Slavin judged the entries and Leon Dull donated feed prizes.
A power shovel was moved in to break ground Wednesday for the 18 bed addition to Clare General Hospital. The extra space will also include administration facilities and related offices. Hospital administrator RM Lesage said bids will be available for use on or about September.
Rosebush hosts annual Homecoming and Celebration July 3 and 4 to raise funds for the memorial field. The two day program features pictures, singing, rodeo events, tractor contests, a barbecue feast, a softball game, a talent show, and fireworks with local committee leadership guiding planning.
Thirteen people were injured in traffic crashes around Clare area last week. Norman Carr 21 of Clare drove a 1940 Ford north on US-27 when lights failed and the car struck a tree four miles south of Clare, injuring six Weidman men and bringing Carr to hospital with head lacerations.
Official notice sets Clare School District meeting at Clare High School Auditorium Monday evening July eight o clock for two school board trustees vacancies and two tax questions. Voters decide on a two bit increase for one year and transfer of funds from the old debt retirement fund to general school operations. Board urges public attendance.
The report states PFC Harry Alfred Lewis died June 4 from wounds received in action with the First Cavalry in Korea on June 3. Born July 36 1925 in Midland, he served in WWII, Sicily, and later the Pacific, and married Patricia Leiter. He leaves two sons, David and Dennis.
