US-27 To Be Opened For Traffic Next Monday
Officials announce that US-27 will reopen to traffic next Monday after completing a second ten foot strip of paving from the CG and O railroad crossing to the Nazarene Church in Isabella county. Karl Fanslau Passes Away in Gladwin County
Karl Fanslau died at 2:20 PM on June 15 after a year and a half of ill health from liver cancer and dropsy. He was 76 years old, survived by a widow Louise and many children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Funeral services were held June 16 at St. John’s By Lutheran and St. John’s Ho Lutheran in Hamilton Township with burial in Arthur Township Church Cemetery.

Eight Marines died and 23 were wounded at Camp LeJeune N C when a short round mortar shell exploded in a command post during practice firing. Francis Frey of Lansing, husband of Marian Voison Archbold, was among the dead. Mortar crews cited ordinary ammunition or a defective shell as possible causes. Frey, a Marine reserve, expected discharge soon.

Haring Farm Barn Burns Down Near Clare
The large Charles Haring farm barn four miles south and two miles east of Clare burned to the ground Monday morning from an unknown origin. The Clare Fire Department responded but the fire was out of control. Loss estimated at 6500 to 7000 dollars with 5000 dollars insured.

Herefords Sold To Cyril Bolle In Local Record Sale
Sixty two head of Herefords from Hildabrae Farm sold in a single transaction to Cyril Bolle last week. The herd owned by Mrs. Kate Dunlop included a pair of registered bulls and over forty five calves with pasturing arrangements noted. The sale sets a local record for a gale to a single buyer.

Vernon Township Pioneer Carl Seiter Passes At 81
Carl Christian Seiter born October 29 1869 in Canton Ohio died June 17 1951 at age 81 in Vernon Township. He lived there since childhood, married Evelyn Crawford in 1906 and had two sons William and Carl. He was active in Clare IOOF Lodge and Rebekah Lodge, shared pioneer memories with neighbors, and is survived by relatives and many friends. Funeral at Rosebush Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev R O Thomson. Interment Vernon Township Cemetery with Stephenson Funeral Home arranging.

More than 200 attended the Dairy Day banquet at Hotel Doherty. Rev. Oscar W. Olson delivered the invocation as Brownie and His Syncopators provided dinner music. Prof. Verne Stockman spoke on dairy economics, inflation, and production, urging renewed duty and voting. Over 1,000 visited the grounds for the cattle show and 4-H and FFA judging, with prizes announced for top youth exhibitors including a Detroit Tigers trip.

Billie L. Coyle 23 of Coleman arrested Sunday on a 3 percent drunk driving charge. He pled guilty in Municipal Court and was fined 53350. license surrendered. Mike Nagy 66 of Rosebush and Charles Thomas Ogle 48 of Clare arrested Friday on drunk and disorderly charges. both pleaded guilty and chose 18.50 fine or 10 days in county jail, and paid.

Dionise Receives Ticket After US-10 Rear-End Collision
Paul Dionise, 28, of Clare was ticketed for excessive speed after his car rear-ended a vehicle driven by Prank Trainor, 29, of rural Rosebush at 2 36 a m Saturday on US-10 a mile west of Clare. Damages were estimated at 700 dollars to the Dionise car and 450 dollars to the Trainor vehicle.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Michigan held its Encampment in Escanaba June 14 to 16. The event featured officer elections a banquet a military ball a color parade and a pageant of drums with thousands watching.
