The Clare Women, twelve to fifteen players from Clare and Meceola Country Club, competed over two days. On June 22 at Meceola, Mrs Josephine Anderson won low gross for Clare, with prizes to Mrs Tim Frey and Mrs Sam Wilkinson. Frey also won a prize at a bridge game. Delbert Fortney 65 a famed oil operator and producer died Tuesday in Grand Rapids where he was on business. His home was in Muskegon and he was active in midwest oil since 1929. He and Charles Strange formed a productive partnership with fields opened in Allegan County and notable wells, including the Greendale Pool east extension and Porter Field west extension. The big Ogeman county gusher near West Branch in 1985 was described as the state s largest. Fortney and Strange reportedly drilled over a hundred producing wells. Fortney ran an office in Mt Pleasant for thirty years before moving to Muskegon.

The Clare unit of the active army reserves sails from Clare by bus to Flint then en trains to Camp McCoy Wisconsin for two weeks of annual summer training from June 27.
