Miss Gladys Knight from Michigan State College met with the Rosebush Presbyterian Church committee on June 7 to discuss kitchen improvements. Plans show two layouts for serving large groups and the committee will use the summer remodeling. Mrs Hugh Swindlehurst chairs the committee.
Mrs Emma Portner recalls rural Maryland methods for making yeast bread. She describes potato yeast starter, mixing with flour, burlap sacks and a crock, rising overnight, and baking in a wood oven tested with a chicken feather. Grandfather supervised the outside oven and leaf pies.
Home Demonstration Council elected officers to lead 39 clubs county wide. New officers include Chairman Mrs. Floyd Curtiss and Vice Chairman Mrs. James Barager. Board members span districts, with Mrs. Lyle Bryant and others. Tour plans for the 17th were set, with 339 members signed up.
The Clare Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Miss Independence contestant to represent Clare in Harrison on July Fourth. Entries are invited from Clare and nearby towns with ages 16 to 22 and single. Judging at Clare City Hall on June 26 at 2 pm. Prizes include 15 dollars for first, 10 for second, 5 for third plus a swimsuit and Harrison trip sponsorship.
Clare Manufacturing held a large employee picnic at the Clare county fair grounds Harrison on Saturday June 12 inviting families bringing 2400 participants. The event featured rides concessions prizes including power lawn mower grill sets radios and various gifts with contests for children and adults and professional and amateur entertainment.
Roy Wilson died at his home after a lingering illness. He previously resided in Clare for many years. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 PM at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery, Clare.
Isa Bell M. Barber of Farwell filed petitions to run in the Clare County primary for county road commissioner, becoming the first woman to enter a road commission race in memory. She cites experience with heavy equipment through a former husband and plans to campaign in Lake George, Farwell, and surrounding areas.
Isabella County farmer Dan Bale warns in the Sentinel on page ten that the coming weeks will bring a risk of serious farm machinery accidents. He urges operators and guardians to stay vigilant around power driven devices and to practice Safety First to protect both workers and children.
Forty five members and guests attended the June meeting of the Clare Methodist Men served by Willard Ireland and committee. Fifteen Reed City guests welcomed. Raymond Verette presided. Hart Beatty, Willard Ireland, Willard Bell, and Conrad Walker elected to officers. Project committee reported. parsonage fund slide show shown. No meetings until September.
Attorney Theodore R. Pixley, previously at 519 McEwan Street Clare, moved his law office on June 11 to the main floor of the building at 703 McEwan Street at the corner of Sixth and McEwan Streets. The new location continues his practice as a solicitor at law.
Esther Nevins earned a University of Michigan diploma with a 3.86 average in the last semester. She returned home to spend the summer with Rev. and Mrs. J. L. J. Nevins and will be employed at the Hotel Doherty. The graduation occurred during a cloudburst that limited the speaker to a brief address.
Mr and Mrs Keith Schultz rejoice and grieve over twin boys born Tuesday June 1 at Mt Pigasaht hospital one stillborn and Edwin Dean Schultz lives at 5 pounds. Mrs Schultz is daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Chmmery and both mother and child reported well. Prayer services for Edwin Dennis held at Thurstons Funeral Home.
Notice to the Clare high school 1929 graduating class invites members to a planning meeting Monday evening June 21 at 8:00 at the Neil Stirling residence. The gathering will organize arrangements for the 25th anniversary reunion.
Central Michigan College and the Department of Public Instruction reiterate that Korean War veterans who were released from active service by August 20 1952 must begin an approved education program by August 20 1954 to receive veterans benefits. Veterans planning college must enroll and take courses during the summer session and contact college officials, including Dean George Lauer, for guidance.
The Clare women cancel the June 16 trip to Portland due to distance and unsettled weather. Eight players met at Twin Elms for a low score blind hole event won by Mrs. Wm. Lange. A schedule of upcoming matches and events follows.
Rev L. J. Nevins was invited to return for a sixth year of ministry at Clare Farwell Methodist Churches after a unanimous vote at the annual Church Conference held June 9. The meeting in Clare Methodist Church also named trustees and stewards, reorganized summer worship times, and planned a representative to the Albion Methodist Laboratory School in July.
Edwin Wichert known as Big Ed, a Clare High School athlete, died by accidental drowning after diving in the Tobacco River three miles east of Clare. Witnesses described the rescue attempt and coroners ruled death due to accidental suffocation by drowning. He was 19, survived by parents, siblings, and local family, with funeral planned in Wise Township Cemetery.
LeDolia Ginn Blanchard, longtime Clare resident, died at Clare General Hospital after two weeks of illness. Born February 1 1960 in Marion Indiana she lived across several states before settling in Clare in 1915. Survived by husband Cecil four daughters two sons father sisters and a brother. Funeral held June 17 at Clare Methodist Church with Rev Nevin officiating. Rebekahs attended in a body. Interment Cherry Grove Cemetery.
