The Harrison County Board of Supervisors rejected an ordinance to curb transient auctions by 1 vote to 8. The measure would require out of state operators to obtain a county license for a 25 fee, post a bond worth twice inventory, and penalize noncompliance with fines up to 100 or nine days in jail. The Sentinel opposed such sales and urged keeping local business protection.

Alice Walter 16 will represent Clare in the Miss Independence contest in Harrison on July 2. She is a Clare High School senior this fall, 5 ft 3 in tall with 34 25 37 measurements, sponsored by the Clare Chamber of Commerce. Other candidates were Martha Lacy and Joanne Archambault. If Miss Clare wins county honors she will be crowned by Gov. G Mention Williams.

St John’s Lutheran to mark 50th anniversary on July 4
St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hamilton Township Michigan will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Sunday July 4 with a sermon by Brot Werter Franzmann of the Michigan Lutheran Seminary Sagao, services at 10 a.m. A noon chicken dinner will be served on the grounds by the ladies of the congregation. At 3700 p.m Rev M Koepseli of Remus will lead a short devotional and read the church history with a roll call of confirmation classes. Special music from the Sunday School includes a clarinet solo by Lois Mielke. Invitations have gone to former confirmation class members and living charter members. The Ladies’ Aid will offer picture plates with a brief church history on the reverse.

First polio cases in year include 11 year old and 23 month old
Donelle Birdsall, 11, daughter of Loren and Mrs Birdsall of Clare, is in Mary Free Bed Guild Children’s Hospital Grand Rapids with a light polio case. She was admitted June 22 after stomach upset and shoulder slump. Victor Joseph Fitzpatrick, 23 months, son of Frederick and Mrs Fitzpatrick of Clare, had a light polio affecting an ankle and spent days in Traverse City hospital.

Three Area Men Volunteer for Army Service
Three area men will leave for the armed services on July 6. They are Carl F. Davis of Clare Bernard Lu Sparta of Farwell and Max Milholm of Clare. All three are volunteers and this fills the July quota. Other men inducted recently were David Prescott and Norman Siebert of Harrison. They went in June.

The Central Michigan Golf Association held its annual Invitational in Portland on Monday June 28. Mr. Pleasant won, Portland took second, with Alma St Johns Clare and Ithaca following. Clare was represented by Mrs Sam Garfield Mrs Josephine Anderson Mrs William Lange and Mrs Harold Wright. A flag tournament followed at the home course with winner Mrs Roy Dunbar. The Sentinel donated flag sticks and flags paper. A Two ball tournament is set for Wednesday July 7 at 9 30 a.m.

Brake Foot Hits Accelerator In Front Of Houghton Drug
Edward H Steinke of 164 Meridan Dearborn lost control while turning right off 5th Street toward McEwan and struck a parked car in front of Houghton Drug store. Charles Durbin of 8691 Mission Road Clare owned the parked car. Damages ranged from 300 to Steinke and 500 to 700 on Durbin’s car. no injuries reported.

Governor G. Mennen Williams will visit Harrison on July 2 to launch a four day Fourth of July celebration. Rosebush schedules a July 5 Homecoming with a parade, softball, tug of war, tractor pull, pony rides, variety show and dances at Rosebush Memorial Park. Participants include Preston Johnmn, Harvey Lowery and Jim Decker. The Harrison event features a queen contest, a 50 float parade on July 5, and a county fairgrounds variety show with wrestling at Snowsnake Mountain July 3.
