In Glare county on June 15 a large crowd attended the eighth grade exercises at Wilson State Park amid showers. A procession from the Clare county rural schools featured 95 graduates receiving diplomas to advance to ninth grade in three county high schools.
Members of the Log Cabin Club hosted a birthday dinner for Mrs. J. H. Wilson at her home on June 21. While she was absent the club prepared for 16, rang the bell to invite her, sang Happy Birthday, served a two course luncheon, and played bridge with prizes to Mrs. Floss Parish and Mrs. Winnie Asker. Mrs. Wilson will soon attend the Century of Progress, a gift from the club.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosted a Wednesday gathering at the Conrad Walker home near Clare Mill Dam for nineteen attendees including nine assisting girls, seven members, and three husbands. The group enjoyed visiting, games, swimming, marshmallows, and a picnic dinner.
The Sentinel reports that seventh grade teacher Beatrice Secor married Harold Utter on July 2 in Wixon Michigan with Rev G W Tolley officiating. She will leave teaching for Ishpeming where they will reside for the summer.
A racing pigeon tagged Buffalo reappears in Sheridan township. Glen Poet found the exhausted bird on a Sunday evening and kept it until Tuesday when the owner in Buffalo claimed it. The note referenced a 600 mile race from Pana Illinois.
The Standard Oil Company is installing a hydraulic grease hoist at its station on corner McEwan and 6th streets. The unit will be sanitary and fire proof with modern safety devices and the latest grease force pumps. The upgrade represents a considerable expense but underscores the company’s commitment to service.
The city fire department responded to a grass fire at Glare Beaverton Lumber yards on Wednesday forenoon. The flames threatened the buildings but no damage was reported.
Last Wednesday night a Saginaw Auditorium gathering discussed natural gas use and pricing for Saginaw Bay City and Bay City residents. Speakers James S. Bicknell and T Carl Holbrook urged building a statewide central pipeline to lower costs and boost gas heating while addressing audience questions. Visitors from Bay City and Clare received thanks from local attendees.
Sixteen Walter H. Larman Post and Auxiliary members travel sixty miles to West Branch for a Tenth District American Legion and Auxiliary meeting. New district officers are elected: Committeeman Leslie Stonehouse Bay City, Alternate Lear J. Doherty Coleman, Adjutant Dan Baker Bay City, Committeewoman Norma Nagel Mt. Pleasant, Alternate Margaret Dawgon West Branch. A parade and dance cap the event with Bay City Mio Drum and Bugle Corps in line.
The Michigan Legislature enacts an inland waters general fishing license requiring all residents over 18 to hold a 50 cent license for the year 1933. Non residents pay the new rate while trout license holders may use their permit as the general license. The rule takes full effect after forms reach 1,800 dealers, with enforcement beginning June 25.
Rev H B Johnson and family from Oxford visit Clare on route to Mackinac Island for a summer vacation. Johnson will preach Sundays for six weeks at Union Congregational Church known as The Little Stone Church with Dr A J MacKenzie sharing duties. Additional sermons planned at Old Mission Church on July 23 and Oxford pulpit covered by Rev A M Meikle with Johnson returning in August.
J H Comer opens a Chevrolet agency in Clare with offices at the Clare Inn on West Fourth Street. He arrives from Marion where he worked with Decker Auto Sales. He invites locals to inspect new Chevrolet models and enjoy a demonstration before buying. The dealer promises bargains on reconditioned cars with affordable price tags.
The city fire department held a steak dinner at Tourist Park near the north city limits. Chief Haley organized committees and cooks battled mosquitos and onions for a grand meal with large steaks, French fries, and other fare. Eight uninvited guests arrived by car, and Eugene Throop claimed the largest steak. The event drew praise as one of the best yet, with more to come.
The Ideal Theatre offers a double feature Wax Museum Mystery and The Parachute Jumper with Lionel Atwell and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. at 10 20 25 cent prices. Vaudeville acts entertain Saturday June 24 with comedy dance and song. The Devil Driving features Edmund Lowe Sunday and Monday June 25 26 with They Just Had to Get Married. Shows run through July 28 with The Outsider and Hell Below announced for early July.
Miss Marion Evelyn Horton Miss Fielen Rose House John Joseph Mc Connell Harold Howard Waite of Clare graduated on a A B and B S degrees respectively from Central State Teachers college Monday. Miss Horton received a honorable mention for Scholarship. A record number of graduates completed four year courses at Central this June 60 receiving A B degrees and 50 more B A degrees. There were 22 regular life and 9 special life certificates granted The limiteds shrank to their smallest proportion in recent years 13 getting 1 year certificates and 2 certificates good for 2 years. Approximately one out of every five graduates has maintained a B average. Many in the line of march were teachers in service who had completed their work in Saturday extension classes. Dr. Rollo Walter Brown of Cambridge Massachusetts chose Shall We Restore Life to the Individual as his topical question for the commencement address June 19.
Wilson State Park near Harrison drew 5730 visitors last week and authorities anticipate nearly double this weekend as campers arrive for the fishing season opener. Superintendent Chas Butts says park facilities are ready and a 12 member orchestra will perform outdoors Sunday at 3 PM. Lifeguard Arnold Hughes oversees water safety at Budd Lake beach with plans for swimming lessons and low rates for gear and towels. Arthur Sheffield, leasing concessions, touts safety and season pass pricing.
Six honor students selected by the high school faculty from the class of 33. Maxine Jones, Margaret Cook, Allan Gerow, Nelda Callihan, Lyle Allen, and Eunice Bicknell earned Honorable Mention from a pool of 48 students based on Citizenship and Scholarship. Selection considered health, habits, dependability, cooperation, and trustworthiness, with top third academic standing as eligibility. Continued on Page Five.
Sunday in Bay City First Baptist Church Miss Frances Ackerman and Hasworth Chaffee wed with Miss Veramae Thompson as bridesmaid and Rolland Comer as best man. Rev. Raymond presided. Bride wore cream crepe gown with carnations. groom in tan suit. They will reside in Glare while the groom helps his parents in the grocery business.
