A petition for a special election to test Clare residents’ support for turning the old millpond site into a residential and recreational lake is likely at the Clare City Commission in coming weeks. Millpond backers seek public approval before city taxpayers bear no cost, financing via stock or subscriptions.

Clare County to Dedicate New Jail Tuesday

The Clare County jail opens for public inspection at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, followed by a dedication at 2 p.m. Speakers include William Nestle state jail inspector, Ivan Cuthbert architect, State Rep. Russell Strange Jr., Circuit Judge Donald E. Holbrook, and county officials led by Albert Haley. James S. Bicknell III acts as master of ceremonies. Peter A. Oman offers invocation and benediction.

Clare County Gasoline Men Organize in Local Meeting

Clare County retail gasoline dealers from Clare and Harrison and surrounding areas voted to form a chapter of the Retail Gasoline Dealers Association of Michigan. Bob Schellhas was named temporary chairman as a dinner meeting is planned to elect officers and finalize organization. The state association is part of the National Congress of Petroleum Retailers.

Extension Council Elects Officers at Clare County Meeting

At the Clare County Extension Council meeting on June 7 a new slate of county officers was elected. Mrs Neil Watkins of Lake was named county chairman after serving as vice chairman. Mrs Albert Price of Harrison became vice chairman and Mrs Alfred Lyons of Harrison was chosen secretary treasurer.

Rev Nevins Returns for Ninth Year at Clare Charge

At the 122nd Michigan Annual Conference in Albion Rev Leslie J Nevins was re appointed to serve the Clare charge for a ninth year. Clare Church boosted membership to 116 and Camp attendance is planned for Intermediate and Senior M Y F. A $50000 educational unit fund campaign at Clare succeeded with a new building planned. Vacation Bible School closes with a Friday pot luck supper and a display of student work.

Scout Leaders Plan Joint Fund Drive in Clare County

Citizens of Clare County gathered in Clare for a joint Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts fundraising plan meeting. Judge Donald E. Holbrook chaired with Oral Smith and Dick Lebetsamer in attendance as advisers. A 16 member county board will be formed to represent communities and set a budget at a July 9 session beginning with a Camp Rotary dinner.

A family style basket picnic will be held June 23 at the home of Mrs. Ray Hooker to honor Hon. Elford Céderberg representative in Congress. The event is nine miles west of Mt. Pleasant and one mile north. Public is invited.

Clare Sidewalk Day promises bigger sales event

Clare merchants prepare for Sidewalk Day on Friday June 28 with outdoor bargain counters, low price tags, and more stores joining. Last year’s carnival atmosphere drew many out of town shoppers, and organizers expect heavier tourist patronage this time. The Clare Chamber of Commerce has new officers since June 1956 and welcomes new members as the event returns larger and livelier than before.

Paul Gibson to Retire After 29 Years as County Agent

Clare County Agricultural Agent Paul D. Gibson will retire from the extension service July 1 after 29 years. The State Board of Agriculture announced the move, and a Paul Gibson Day was proclaimed during a county Christmas tree management event. He taught agriculture in Vassar before joining the Clare county office in 1928.

About fifty residents attended the Clare Isabella School District 8 meeting held June 12 at the school to discuss overcrowding solutions and financing for a proposed Clare Public School build. Attendees questioned consultants Al Hamlin and Clark Ackley while district leaders listened. most opposed the previously rejected building program.

Farwell Girl Attacked By Meningitis

An 11 year old girl, Helen Doonan of Farwell, Clare County, contracted spinal meningitis this week and is recovering at Mt. Pleasant hospital. Dr. Donald Dunlop reported definite improvement after sulfa treatment, with infection not highly epidemic and spread unlikely within the family.
