Earl Henry Sternaman born January 5 1890 in Owosso Michigan died June 9 1947 at Saginaw General Hospital after two weeks illness from cerebral hemorrhage He lived 25 years in Clare as a photographer with Day Studio Owosso. married Clara Kerby in Owosso June 17 1917 They had Phillis Sue and Jack He belonged to Michigan Photographer's Society received national honor in 1936 for Our Little Bit of Heaven He served Clare Methodist Church Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce active in Boy Scouts Survived by wife Clara daughter Phillis Sue son Jack sister Mrs William McBride Owosso brother Frank predeceased Funeral at Jennings Lyons Owosso conducted by Rev Chas B Hahn Oak Hill Cemetery Owosso.

Pre School Health Roundup Planned Next Wednesday

The Clare County Health Department and local schools sponsor a pre school roundup at the Clare County Health Department offices in City Hall on June 25 at 9 00 a m for all children entering school this fall from Clare Grant Sheridan Hatton and Arthur townships. The event offers a complete physical exam diphtheria immunization and smallpox vaccination. Early screening helps children adjust to school and allows time to follow up on recommendations. Bring the child to a family physician or to the clinic.

Mrs G Masten Honored By CBS At Clare Church Dinner

Mrs Greta Masten associate grand conductress of the Grand Chapter O B S of Michigan is honored with a seven o clock dinner for about two hundred guests at the Clare Methodist church parlor. Bay City Optometrist Receives Silver Star Medal

Dr John G White 112 Wheaton Ave Bay City received the Silver Star Medal in a June 12 1947 ceremony at the Bay City Army Recruiting Main Station. He earned the honor for gallantry in Luxembourg on January 26 1945 as a 1st Lieutenant with the 317th Infantry Regiment 80th Infantry Division, sacrificing to divert a German attack and was later captured. The medal was presented by Lt Colonel Donald J Russell.

Wedgewood Room Opens at Hotel Doherty

The Wedgewood Room at Hotel Doherty opened to the public Tuesday evening June 10 with a capacity crowd. Guests included President and Mrs. Harold Heden of the Michigan Hotel Association and several hotel executives. Dinner ran from 8 to 12 with dancing, and future services include Sunday dinners and Saturday night dances.

Legion Juniors Fall to Alma and Mt Pleasant

The Clare based Legion junior nine opened season with a 6 to 3 loss to Alma juniors at Alma. Jim Joslin pitched for Clare allowing four hits and two runs in the first, third, and sixth innings while Vallance held Clare to three runs in the third. Mt Pleasant beat Clark juniors 7 to 6 and schedule shows Midland hosting June 25 with July 2 rematch, plus July 9 at Mt Pleasant and Alma visiting July 17.

Clare Legion to Install Officers Monday Evening

Walter H. Larman Post No. 128 American Legion will install officers elected May 26 for the coming year in the city hall auditorium next Monday evening June 23. A top installing team from the state will preside and veterans are urged to attend and support the post and unit.

Mrs Maud Utley Passes Away at Farwell Home

Mrs Maud McLellan Utley died at her Farwell home on June 5 1947 aged 72 years 10 months 11 days. She married John E B Leonard in 1893 and Joseph Edward Utley in 1906. Survived by daughter Gladys Leonard Vick four grandchildren a sister in law and other relatives. Funeral held June 8 at Farwell Methodist Church.

Frank T Lagoe Named Cashier at Beaverton Bank

Frank T LaGoe, former Clare bank assistant cashier and Coast Guard lieutenant (jg), has accepted the cashier position at Gladwin County Bank in Beaverton after five years in Marion and Mt. Pleasant banks. He recently completed two weeks of post graduate banking study at the University of Wisconsin. Harley Miner, former Beaverton cashier, resigned for another banking post.

Health officials prepare for polio emergency response

The Michigan State Health Department and county chapters of the National Foundation plan close cooperation for polio emergencies. National Foundation State Representative Donald W. Barton said emergency treatment centers could be set up quickly if hospitals fail to absorb cases. The Foundation would provide funds equipment and personnel, as it did during Minnesota’s epidemic with iron lungs hot packs and therapists.

Clare church honors Rev. Chas Hahn with sixth year

Rev. Charles B. Hahn was returned to the Clare-Farwell Methodist Church charge for another year at the Michigan Annual Conference in Albion. Since arriving in July 1942 his five years have seen membership growth, building improvements, and a strong spiritual uplift praised by both Clare and Farwell communities.

Death of Mrs. Bertha Randle in Sheridan township

Mrs. Bertha Randle age 76 from Sheridan township died after a ten day stroke illness on June 8. Funeral services set for 2:00 PM Saturday at Thurston Funeral Home. Her life story will be published next week.

Mary Elizabeth Cornell died at her Garfield township home at 1 PM Monday June 16. Funeral services were held at 2 PM Thursday at Lake town hall with Rev. Earl Redman officiating. Second Annual Dairy Day Opens in Clare with Big Turnout

After poor weather, Clare hosted the second annual Four County Dairy Day drawing about two thousand attendees. The event featured 85 top purebred cattle judged by local youths in three large tents and prizes awarded to 4 H Club and F.B.A. participants from Clare Isabella Midland Beaverton and Gladwin. Lunch included barbecue beef and ham with cakes and beverages served by Beta Sigma Phi.

Two Cars Involved In Head On Collision Saturday Morning

A 1941 Plymouth driven south by Raymond Schofield and a 1933 coupe driven north by Malcom Cornett collided 200 feet south of Clare city limits at 12 40 Saturday morning. Passengers Mable Quilan and Rosgemary Dwyer suffered facial and leg injuries respectively and were treated and released. Cornett reportedly took responsibility for the crash.
