Leola Heath recalls janitor work for 35 a month while teaching sixty pupils and her sister earned 25 a month. She remembers a horse driven merry go round five cents a ride, Santa in a cotton beard, church lunches, Fourth of July picnics, and funerals held at home with graves fenced to keep cattle out.
The Well Baby Conference dates and locations are set. On June 16 at 9 to 11 am sessions will be at Farwell Methodist Church and at Clare Congregational Church from 1 to 3 pm. Harrison Court House basement hosts the June 18 session from 9 to 11 am.
Clare county youth join Michigan 4-H club Week at Michigan State College from June 28 to July 1. County agent Jerry Malosh notes leader Mrs. Clinton Dunkle will accompany the group. A full list of selections will be announced later. Speakers include George McIntyre and Dr. Elmer Knowles. Tours planned of the state capitol and the Olds plant. Early eliminations for trips to Washington, D C and the Toronto Exposition in 1955 are also on the agenda.
Ted Hoersch of Clare wins top honor with 196 of 200 as Isabella county 4-H judging team competes in Watford Ontario Shorthorn field Day. Gratiot county team takes overall honors while Isabella seeks revenge next year.
Conservation crews will survey and conduct channel and upland work on seven Michigan stream systems next year. Included are the Cedar River watershed in Gladwin and Clare counties, the Fox River in Schoolcraft County, the Pine River in Osceola Lake and Wexford counties, the Maple River in Emmet County, Swan Creek in Allegany, Huron River in Washtenaw and Livingston counties, and Otter River in Houghton County.
Two representatives from Clare and Kiwanis and Rotary clubs will appear on WWTV to promote the Operation Splash pool project. The publicity committee reports near 20 000 dollars pledged, with concrete or steel tank construction yet to be chosen. Building and site committees await announcements as the clubs finalize by laws so contributors can claim tax deductions.
Michigan State College entomologists advise using an exterminator or bee specialist for wall nests. If doing it yourself, locate the nest by tapping walls to hear bees, then spray direct on the nest with caution. Cyano fas requires experience and vacating the house. Wear a veil smoker and gloves. remove the nest when possible.
A teen age dance is announced at Clare City Hall for the evening of June 12 with jive music by the Rhythm Makers from eight to twelve. Teen agers from Clare and surrounding towns are invited and admission is 85 cents per person.

Central Michigan College awarded 466 degrees and certificates at its 59th commencement on June 5. Clare County graduates totaled nine, including Arnold Newman and Nancy Wild, both earning B S degrees, plus Beaverton, Gladwin, Harrison, Shepherd, Barryton, Coleman, and Houghton Lake natives with various bachelor or certification credentials.
Michigan State College farm economist Don H. Stark notes 12,000-pound cows outperform many smaller producers. Last year 234 average cows equaled one 12,000-pounder, and 10,000 to 12,000 pound producers may yield over a dollar an hour for labor, though pay could drop by 50 cents from last year as demand rises for hamburger and sausage.
Grandwood Broadcasting Company begins ground clearing for a new studio and office building on College Avenue near Cherry Street in Grand Rapids as part of a million dollar expansion. Bill Schroeder says studios open in December. a 1,000 foot tower has been completed and power increased from 28,500 to 316,000 watts.
A forest woodchuck in the western peninsula scavenges fishing rods left by a husband and wife duo. The creature eats cork from handles, explores the car interior, and is startled when a fan-like part triggers a trim to its tail area. It escapes to the woods to sleep standing up.
Six young women and two men win scholarships based on achievement and recommendations. Joyce Jones and Richard Clink receive college scholarships at Michigan institutions. others attend Central Michigan Madonna College and Michigan Tech. Some Honor Society members are among the winners. selection emphasizes service leadership and character.
State foresters won conservation commission approval to sell about 33000 cords of pulpwood 6500 cedar posts and 6000 board feet of sawtimber across four state forests Houghton Lake Manistique River Ogema and Hardwood. Land exchanges gas and oil lease actions and extensions were also approved.
Chuck Pruitt, senior outfielder for Central Michigan College, is trying out with the Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians this week. He was named MVP for the past two seasons, has five home runs in 20 games, batted .318, and made one error this season.
On Monday morning June 7 the Claré Congregational Vocation Bir ble School held its first session with sixty seven pupils enrolled. The two week course uses The Church as its theme with stories games songs and handwork about the church. Plans are made for a closing program and picnic Friday June 18 at the close of the morning session. All parents and friends will be invited.
William Osborn of Manistique the oldest hunter in Michigan reports a 1953 deer bag. At 83 he notes the 62nd year of whitetail hunting, using self-made archery gear. He hunted alone and released an adult buck with homemade bow and arrows last fall.
The Clare women golf team traveled to Ithaca and lost 3 to 2. Mrs. Ruby Garfield of Clare and Mrs. Blanche Martin of Ithaca won low scores. Next week June 16 Clare women travel to Portland for a 9:30 a.m. match. contact Mrs Beatrice Lange for transportation.

Two local men join the judging panel for Kraft Foods Junior Dairyman competition in Michigan. Dale Hines and Lloyd Norcutt, vocational agriculture teachers, were announced by Virgil Bergstrom of Clare Kraft plant. The program trains 4 H and FFA youth in all aspects of dairy farming, with prizes and scholarships for top performers.
Farmers on land with no wheat seeded for grain in 1952 53 and 54 may apply for a 1955 wheat acreage allotment. Applications must be sent in writing to the county ASC committee by June 30 1954. Blank forms are available at the county ASC office.
The Clare American Legion Auxiliary will meet Monday evening June 14 for its regular business meeting. They will also elect delegates to the state convention at Grand Rapids July 22 through 25.
The Army has a general who wears gold bars instead of stars. The man’s true rank is second lieutenant, a Reserve Officers' Training Corps commission from Howard University. Birth records list him as General Pearson, Lieutenant General Pearson. He lives at 636 Church St Lynch Ky and attends Fort Benning Infantry School.
Two young men were hospitalized after a high speed crash on Clare's west end. Harry Burt Jr. 21 of Saginaw and Bruce Andre 24 of Brown City were cited by Officer Mickey McDonald at 1:50 am for intoxication. Andre owned the car, a new Chevrolet with low mileage, involved in a wreck that ripped down power poles and damaged a tree and a chiropractor office. Burt suffered head and facial lacerations. Andre remained in shock with charges for allowing an intoxicated person to drive.
