The Glare-Isabella Automobile Dealers Association held its monthly meeting at the Doher ty Hotel on Tuesday May 18 select ing Gene Rowland as President succeeding Harold Krapohl Russ Tompkins as Vice President Chuck Hibbard as Secretary and Ed Smith as Treasurer The group announced new leadership for the organization.
Clare police report a near record low for holiday driving incidents on U S 27 and U S 10 from May 28 to May 31. Chief Bert Head said no accidents or bumped fenders occurred and only eleven traffic tickets were issued. Charles Ogle of Clare and John Zygmunt of Mt. Pleasant faced justice court for passing bad checks after a grocery store cashing incident.

Emmett McConnell born Wise Township June 9 1899 died suddenly May 26 in Detroit while employed at Bower Roller Bearing Company. Survived by wife Mary J White four children two brothers Edward Dominic and Patrick and sister Mrs C Watters. Funeral at Clare May 29 with High Mass by Fr Josef Sriba. Interment in church cemetery.
Clare high school coach Arthur Teixeira resigns after one year to become head football coach at Romulus High in Michigan. He helped revive basketball and establish a new track program, while his wife will join Romulus as a teacher.
Clare County wheat growers with excess acreage may qualify for the 1954 allotment program by green manuring, pasture, hay or silage cuts, or seeding at least one bushel per acre of spring rye or barley. Excess standing wheat after June 15 counts toward allotment. farms with over 15 acres face $1.12 per bushel penalty, while farms at 15 acres or less may plant up to 15 acres without penalties.
Rain yesterday afternoon forced postponement of the Men’s Golf Club match with the St. Johns team. Sports committee member N. A. Elden said August 26 has been set as the date for the match to be played.
Miss Bolen and Mr. Walters reported that the employees association voted to contribute $1,000 from funds on hand for the pool project at the Clare plant. The meeting showed much enthusiasm among workers for the swimming facility.
The Michigan State Police placed in service an 88 foot mobile field office on a trailer. It includes four radio transmitters a five line trunk switchboard and 12 extensions. It can link with State Police Conservation local police sheriffs National Guard Civil Defense and other networks. The unit features a public address system 45 foot antenna tower 5 000 watt auxiliary generator and Bell telephone installations for central office or battery operation.
Traffic on US-27 may rise next week due to the two and a half mile US-23 closure near Standish for pavement work. The highway department announces a detour on a county road near Standish for ten days starting June 7.
D. E. Holbrook named National MM Delegate as 2000 plus attendees prepare to gather at Purdue University Lafayette Indiana July 9 11 The event first sponsored by The Methodist Church General Board of Lay Activities Chicago will convene under the theme Methodist Men Work for Christ Principal speakers include Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr and Fran H Faber Minneapolis Minn who serves as general chairman of the conference.
Ada Rekers born in 1880 in Iowa, married Claude Rekers in 1900 at Clare. She lived in Iowa Indiana and Michigan, two sons Russell and Lawrence with Lawrence in Pontiac. Survived by Claude, Lawrence, brothers John and George, sister Grace, six grandchildren and eight nieces and six nephews.
The Clare Board of Education completed a sale for the purchase of the Holbrook farm residence and surrounding land, totaling about $16,500 with a life lease to Mrs. William Holbrook Sr. The property fronts Cemetery Road and Wheaton Avenue, extends the school boundaries, and may host a future community swimming pool with a portion set aside for Pioneer Swimming Pool Corporation.
The Congregational Church shifts to a 10 AM summer worship starting June 6 with Children’s Day exercises. Sunday School remains at 10, and daily Bible school runs June 7 to 18 from 9 to 11:45. Ages 3 ½ to grade 6 invited. transportation arranged by calling 454. Staff includes named teachers. volunteers serve cookies. closing program and picnic planned for June 18.
An intensified Dodge advertising drive is announced by Jack W. Minor of Dodge ads and the Grant Advertising company. Many weekly and most daily papers will carry the campaign. The Clare Sentinel lists Brackart Auto Sales in Clare. Two Dodge TV shows are renewed through the summer.
Michigan will fall under the moon’s shadow on June 30 with the upper peninsula in near total shade and the lower peninsula seeing a partial eclipse. Cranbrook Institute astronomer William Schultz Jr notes the event will be the last in the state until after 2000 and cautions on eye safety during eclipse viewing.
Leonard Gross of Clare caught a brow n trout over 20 inches long in Tobacco river two miles from Clare. The fish was dressed and weighed almost three pounds. scales showed four pounds live weight. Teammate Gene Brandon also fished with Gross and landed a twelve inch brook trout. The anglers described the big fish as strong and lively.

Anna Mae Cox, 26, daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Cox, was among seniors recognized by College President John A Hannah at Lantern Night on campus. The ceremony marked the end of their college careers as senior women pass leadership to the next class.
