Opening of Clare's 1937 Golf Season at Twin Elms

Clare's 1937 golf season opens next Sunday at 1 PM at Twin Elms Golf Course. The "Bet a Million" opening tournament gives players 10000 dollars in mixed bills to start, with four games and prizes for the top money winner. Entry and foursome registrations close by Sunday noon with Leo Hampton.

Two Claire High H E Girls Win Prizes in Cake Baking Contest

In Bay City May 29 the cake baking contest sponsored by the Bay City Times awarded prizes to seven entrants from Clare High School. Betta Walker won second prize in the 16 year division for lemon marshmallow cake and Audrey Dee Willey won third prize for angel food cake. Betty Lou Wilson, 13, earned the grand prize a two week camping trip at Camp Miaqua on Loon Lake.

Oil Drillers Report 2500 Feet Deep Strike Crooked Well

Drillers on the McKinnon well north side of section 5 have reached 2500 feet. The hole turned crooked Wednesday and attempts to straighten it were made overnight. The drive pipe on the wall has reached 470 feet with the oil on a downward course again.

New Record Claimed for Gladwin Oil Well

Mammoth Producing and Refining Corp completed drilling Wednesday on the Ockerman No. 3 oil well and claims it is the largest flush in the state the past three years. With tools in the hole the well flowed at 225 barrels per hour Wednesday night. The Gladwin County oil strike occurred at 3 833 feet in Hockeys township.

Clare High School Vesper Service at Auditorium Sunday

The senior class of Clare High School, forty eight students, will hold vesper services Sunday evening at eight in the auditorium. The program includes a processional, choir music, two hymns, a graduates message by Rev. Geo P. Stanford, class motto launched but not anchored, colors pink and blue, flower sweet peas, and seniors named to The National Hemner Society. Commencement address by Rev. Camp Temple Disbanded After Two Years Of Work

CCC Camp Temple located 14 miles northwest of Harrison in the Houghton Lake State Forest is evacuated by order in a nationwide camp reduction. Enrollees from closed camps will join remaining camps to boost size to 16 men per camp. Work completed includes fire control roads bridges and new facilities at Tobacco River Station and Wilson State Park.

Extension groups in-n county complete course in nutrition

The seventh annual Achievement Day of Clare County Home Economics Extension Clubs was held at City Hall in Clare on May 28 with about 150 attendees. Twelve groups presented nutrition exhibits, nine finishing 100 percent and an county average of 84 percent, led by Miss Roberta Hersey of Michigan State College. Guest speaker Miss Mildred Jones discussed Modern Cookery and home life in the south. Mr Gibson presented certificates and Miss Nelson announced county officers for 1937-38: Stella Myers chair, Zora Penrose secretary, Pearle Spink recreation leader.

Bears and Coyotes Begin Annual Harvest Concerns Rise

Farmers report predatory depredations as bears and coyotes threaten flocks. A. Durham’s flock near Harrison lost two ewes and a lamb, while Albert Bruce’s lambs were killed. Zenobia Chapter Presents Play and Magic Show

Zenobia Chapter No. 129 of the Order of the Eastern Star sponsored an entertainment at the Masonic Hall last Monday. The program opened with a dramatized reading of The Twelve Pound Look directed by Louisa Bowler, featuring Sir Harry Sims Margaret McKnight Lady Sims Leta Bates Tombes Louisa Bowler Kate and Jane Keschman. The second act offered vodal solos by Donis Garow with Adelaide Wilie on piano, including Gypsy Love Song and Little Old Lady. Loomis expands his machine shop by purchasing the A. Desormeau property at Fourth and Pine and starting demolition of the old blacksmith shop. Funeral Services for Albina Alwood Heed

Albina Alwood Heed died May 16 in Lansing at age 74 after a long life spent in Clare County and Lansing. She leaves three daughters and two sons, twenty-two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many relatives. Funeral services were held May 19 at United Brethren Church in Brown Church with burial at Cherry Grove cemetery.
