Clare's 1937 golf season opens next Sunday at 1 PM at Twin Elms Golf Course. The "Bet a Million" opening tournament gives players 10000 dollars in mixed bills to start, with four games and prizes for the top money winner. Entry and foursome registrations close by Sunday noon with Leo Hampton.
In Bay City May 29 the cake baking contest sponsored by the Bay City Times awarded prizes to seven entrants from Clare High School. Betta Walker won second prize in the 16 year division for lemon marshmallow cake and Audrey Dee Willey won third prize for angel food cake. Betty Lou Wilson, 13, earned the grand prize a two week camping trip at Camp Miaqua on Loon Lake.
Drillers on the McKinnon well north side of section 5 have reached 2500 feet. The hole turned crooked Wednesday and attempts to straighten it were made overnight. The drive pipe on the wall has reached 470 feet with the oil on a downward course again.
Mammoth Producing and Refining Corp completed drilling Wednesday on the Ockerman No. 3 oil well and claims it is the largest flush in the state the past three years. With tools in the hole the well flowed at 225 barrels per hour Wednesday night. The Gladwin County oil strike occurred at 3 833 feet in Hockeys township.
The senior class of Clare High School, forty eight students, will hold vesper services Sunday evening at eight in the auditorium. The program includes a processional, choir music, two hymns, a graduates message by Rev. Geo P. Stanford, class motto launched but not anchored, colors pink and blue, flower sweet peas, and seniors named to The National Hemner Society. Commencement address by Rev. Carleton Brooks Miller on Friday June 1th. detailed program to appear in The Sentinel next week.
CCC Camp Temple located 14 miles northwest of Harrison in the Houghton Lake State Forest is evacuated by order in a nationwide camp reduction. Enrollees from closed camps will join remaining camps to boost size to 16 men per camp. Work completed includes fire control roads bridges and new facilities at Tobacco River Station and Wilson State Park.
The seventh annual Achievement Day of Clare County Home Economics Extension Clubs was held at City Hall in Clare on May 28 with about 150 attendees. Twelve groups presented nutrition exhibits, nine finishing 100 percent and an county average of 84 percent, led by Miss Roberta Hersey of Michigan State College. Guest speaker Miss Mildred Jones discussed Modern Cookery and home life in the south. Mr Gibson presented certificates and Miss Nelson announced county officers for 1937-38: Stella Myers chair, Zora Penrose secretary, Pearle Spink recreation leader.
Farmers report predatory depredations as bears and coyotes threaten flocks. A. Durham’s flock near Harrison lost two ewes and a lamb, while Albert Bruce’s lambs were killed. A Garfield Township shepherd glimpsed a bear in his pasture. Legislation on higher coyote bounties and trapping instruction awaits the Governor’s signature, likely by July 1.

Clare Home Ec girls and mothers dine at the second annual banquet and style show held June 1 at the school gym. The evening featured a banquet program exhibits and a style show with Miss Waite as guest speaker and Miss Freegard honored guest.
George Timmons, longtime Dow Chemical employee and experienced farmer, bought the A E Wilkinson Implement and gas business on East Fourth Street in Midland. The Wilkinsons, known for selling International Harvester farm tools and repairs, plan a bright future with a new car and potential house trailer amid a forthcoming vacation.
Richard Reinaima pro from Mt Pleasant Country Club spoke to the Women Golfers at Twin Bins Golf Club about the mental condition of golf. Morning play saw Mrs E Hampton, Mrs James Olson, and Mrs C Titud tied for low putts. Margaret Dohlerty won a driving contest. On June 2 Alma Women Golfers visit Clare group for lunch at Twin Elms Clubhouse after 9:30 am play. reservations via Mrs Joseph Naumes or Mrs James Olson. A sports committee meeting at the clubhouse on Monday June 7 at 2:00 pm will discuss filed deals.
Zenobia Chapter No. 129 of the Order of the Eastern Star sponsored an entertainment at the Masonic Hall last Monday. The program opened with a dramatized reading of The Twelve Pound Look directed by Louisa Bowler, featuring Sir Harry Sims Margaret McKnight Lady Sims Leta Bates Tombes Louisa Bowler Kate and Jane Keschman. The second act offered vodal solos by Donis Garow with Adelaide Wilie on piano, including Gypsy Love Song and Little Old Lady. The finale showcased Ansél M Ward of Wheaton Illinois a noted magician performing about two dozen tricks including vanishings and productions from hats boxes and ropes.
A Tuesday morning clinic from 9:00 to 1:00 was held in Clare County Nurses office by Dr. Osterlin a child specialist from Central Michigan Children's clinic and hospital Traverse City. He saw nineteen children and noted several interesting cases then consulted with Dr C B Wood and J C B Slattery about private cases they wished him to Hecke
The Clare County Ministerial Association will meet at the Methodist church Monday at 10 a.m. The day’s program includes discussion of evangelistic opportunity, religious program for resort activity, and a book report God and Human Nature by Rev Albert Dawe, pastor of the Clare Congregational church. All ministers of the county are invited.

Loomis expands his machine shop by purchasing the A. Desormeau property at Fourth and Pine and starting demolition of the old blacksmith shop. Walter Willits of Bay City is contractor in charge, with occupancy expected by August 1. Loomis began five years ago and now operates one of Central Michigan’s best equipped shops.
Albina Alwood Heed died May 16 in Lansing at age 74 after a long life spent in Clare County and Lansing. She leaves three daughters and two sons, twenty-two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many relatives. Funeral services were held May 19 at United Brethren Church in Brown Church with burial at Cherry Grove cemetery.

Several thousand attended the Memorial Sunday events at Cherry Grove Cemetery. The program included a march from the Clare Community Building to the cemetery with escort by State Police and a drum and bugle corps. Remarks by Joseph Kitchin and honors to local veterans highlighted a procession featuring a firing squad and school participation.
Ernest Chaffee acquires the Martin Grocery stock from Glen Martin. Chaffee will assume possession next Tuesday morning and plans to welcome former customers and new patrons. Martin will assist his father who owns Standish and Pinconning stores.
Next Sunday morning June the Walter H Larman Post 128 American Legion will journey to Higgins Lake for an all day work session and a noon picnic. Members and local Auxiliary Unit will erect a cottage on the Bos lot and later share a shore lunch.
