At Cherry Grove Cemetery N K Tibbits directed the program as Clare High School Band played the Star Spangled Banner and Mayor John W Dunlop delivered a full address promoting peace.

Clare High School Holds Thirty-Third Annual Commencement
Clare High School marks its fifty-first annual commencement with graduates receiving diplomas as the class of thirty-three closes its high school chapter. Speakers reflect on milestones and future plans for students entering college, trade programs, or the workforce.
Clare Library Association Reports Splendid Year
The Annual meeting at the City Library saw Mrs. L. W. Jackson lead a review of a successful year. Reports credited officers, 160 adult and 100 junior books added, 600 mended via W P A, reading tables in four rural schools, and a 1000 monthly average circulation with a $589 balance. New officers elected: Ethel I Allen president, Hochstetler vice president, Francis Anderson secretary, Irwin Schlegel treasurer.

Upper Marshall oil well developed in Clare County
The Loveless farm near Cherry Grove north of the cemetery yielded the state’s only upper Marshall formation oil well. Drillers Nels Bernier and Clarence Tucker struck oil at 1316 feet on May 22, gas filled the casing, and several barrels were produced. Acidizing on Monday increased flow and confirmed a good producer.

Rural Fire Truck Saves Large Area From Fire
James A. Clare drove the rural fire truck with two assistants to a field nine miles north of Clare last Thursday afternoon. The grass blaze threatened hundreds of acres of undergrowth timber and fields but was controlled quickly due to the truck's 185 gallon water load and forced pressure. Witnesses say twenty minutes later the fire would have required many hundreds more men to control.

Three Weekend Auto Crashes Reported in County
A Sunday incident near Arthur township left John Rhodes’s car rear ended by Edgar West of Grand Ledge with Bernie Mitchell hurt. Early Monday Dr. F G Slattery cut his arm in a US-27 wreck near Harrison. An afternoon Farwell tow crash injured two youths, a 12 and 15 year old, after the vehicle left the road and struck a tree.

Death of Fred Waltz in Grant Township
Fred Waltz 71 of Grant township died at home after a long illness. He is survived by his widow Eva Waltz and a sister in Aurora Illinois. Funeral services were held at the Church of God with H. L. Cleveland officiating and burial in Cherry Grove cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

Clare Scouts End Camp Drive Saturday
Clare Boy Scouts will be out Saturday morning to sell Salt Water Taffy in a final drive for camp funds. Seventeen scouts from troop 1265 plan to attend, with $35 raised so far. Organizers hope Saturday sales will allow at least 4.00 per scout toward camp expenses.

Tonight at 8 the class night program shows schoolroom decor with Neil Sowle as teacher, songs, history, poems, solos, and a boys quartet. Senior Vesper service Sunday June 5 at 8 features processional, music, a graduation message, motto, colors, flowers, and NHS selections.

Home Economics Activities At Clare High School
The Boys Home Economics classes hosted a luncheon Thursday at noon with members forming family groups to assist in food preparation. The tenth grade class served a dinner at 4 30 pm with students handling marketing, cooking and serving. Ten girls served city luncheon for visiting bands on Saturday May 27 at noon.
Clare reports traffic smooth during Decoration Day weekend
Clare officials credit no accidents as hundreds of visitors and motorists traveled through the city at the US 27 and US 10 intersection. Mayor Dunlop and Police Chief Dunlop led rapid traffic flow efforts while a new Tourist information booth aided travelers. Mrs Mabel Horton staffed the booth and solicited local sleeping rooms for tourists for the season, with registration via phone 105, the booth to operate daily after school ends June 10.

The Walt er H. Larman Post Drum and Bugle Corps sponsored a Sunday program at Jack Rudy's field. "Wild Bill" Welch and the Motor Maniacs staged automobile and motorcycle stunts to raise funds for new uniforms. One minor accident occurred when a motorcyclist struck a wall of flaming boards, injuring his forehead. he was treated locally and released.
