Upstate Janitors Club Makes Extensive Michigan Trip

Clare County Janitors group returned from a seven day 1400 mile motor tour through northern Michigan led by Miss Helen Hether with thirteen rural teachers. They visited Hartwick Pines Gaylord Mackinaw City Iron Mountain Hancock Marquette Munising Sault Ste Marie Mackinac Island and returned to Clare/Harrison, sharing meals and lodging at various cabins. Total trip cost 509.32 from a 570.90 fund. bus expenses 140.15. four restaurant meals 79.80. beds and groceries listed.

Frances Anderson Wins Ladies Flag Tournament at Twin Elms

Frances Anderson captured the ladies flag title at Twin Elms on Wednesday June 8. She planted her flag on the eleventh green with Mrs Garfield second, about 76 yards off the tee. Fifteen players endured a chilly wind. next week Clare Women meet Mt Pleasant at Mt Pleasant at nine o clock. District Tournament slated for Ithaca July 19 to 21 with qualifying July 1 to 13.

Saginaw Man Dies Suddenly at Union Depot

George W. Hall 69, a retired Pere Marquette conductor, died suddenly at the Union Depot in Saginaw while waiting for an eastbound train. He had spent the day with his son John R. Hall, owner of a Shell station on South McEwan, and is survived by his daughter Mrs. Chas. J. Smith. Funeral services were held from his Saginaw home and interment was at Caseville.

Howard Claim Heard In Midland Circuit Court

Judge Ray Hart presided in Midland Circuit Court over an appeal from Clare County Probate Court concerning Etta Howard's claim of 3500 for services to James Duncan. Testimony included Etta Howard Frances Koch William Cole Sheral Callihan and a deposition from Judge Thomas S Dorsey. The administrator Clyde C Harris offered no additional evidence. briefs will be filed before the judge rules.

Merchants Luncheon Arranged by Saginaw Wholesale Bureau

The Sentinel reports the Wholesale Merchants Bureau of Saginaw will visit Tuesday June 14 arriving about 11:30 and hosting a complimentary luncheon at Hotel Doherty noon. The party touring by auto includes the Saginaw Eddy Band and features Mayor Dunlop and Chamber of Commerce members as speakers.

Burial Funeral for Wellington Airey in Farwell

Wellington Airey died suddenly in Flint after falling ill at his sister’s home. He was born May 31 1913 in Marion Michigan and grew up in Clare. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church with burial in Farwell Cemetery. He was survived by his father Fred Airey and grandmother who cared for him after his mother’s early death.

James Irwin Elected Noble Grand of I O C F

Last Friday Clare Lodge No. 333 Independent Order of Odd Fellows held its regular meeting and elected officers for 1938. Noble Grand James Irwin, Vice Grand Ernest Irwin, Recording Sec Alexander B H Wylie, Financial Sec John L Redabaugh, Treasurer Leo H E Oden, District Deputy Grand Master Martz Detwiler, Delegate Oliver W Nash, Alternate Harry G Nowlen. Installation to follow early next month with nine appointees and two by the Vice Grand. In Grand Lodge elections Fred A Rogers of Reading was backed over David G Ramsey of Highland Park in the only contested post.

Earl Green deputy County Clerk states the Clare County Road Commission moved the July meeting from the 3rd to the 5th because the 3rd falls on a Sunday and the following day is a holiday.

Boys Return From Northern College With Engineer's Diploma

Byron Gibbs returned Monday from Houghton Michigan where he completed a four year course in electrical engineering at the Michigan College of Mines and Technology and graduated last Thursday. Keith Detwiler also returned last Saturday after spending his freshman year at the Northern College. Weith hopes to find summer work to aid his budget and plans to return as a sophomore.

Miss Muriel Smalley and Verne Hains exchanged wedding vows in Lansing with Rev. Gordon Speer officiating. Attendants were George Scott and his wife, as the couple plan to reside in Arthur Township. bride works as a bookkeeper at Davys' Department Store.

Oil Drilling Underway in Wise County Wells

Drillers at the Campbell well near the center of section 11 Wise township are now drilling below 29100 feet. The Charters Currie No 4 near the center of section 8 Vernon township was halted after a broken machine part forced a stop in drilling. An advertisement notes lovely gifts in imported Italian alabaster and wrought iron at The Gift and Flower Shop.

Detroit and Florida Cars Crash on US-10 Sunday

Two cars from Detroit and Florida collided about noon Sunday one mile east of Clare on US-10 as the Florida vehicle tried to cross the pavement. Both cars were badly damaged but drivers escaped major injuries. Chief of Police Wm. Dunlop investigated.

Artists Jerry and Mast Host Clare Kiwanians

Sylvester Jerry head of the Michigan Federal Arts Project and artist Gerald Mast spoke at the Clare Kiwanians meeting. Slides and reels showcased Federal Arts murals, sculpture, Pewabic pottery, and Mast at work on Clare murals. Both men reside in Detroit. Paul Lowrey arranged the program.

Court releases six young men in special session

A Clare County Circuit Court special session in Harrison presided by Judge Hart released six young men after guilty pleas in five break in and larceny cases. Defendants Ernie Cleveland Bernie Cleveland William J Hanes faced three similar cases with grocery store thefts. Frederick Nehls John Schroeder and Bernard Kirkpatrick admitted theft of a cow. Clarence Good pleaded guilty to unlawful auto removal.

City Officials and WPA Active with Street Improvement

City officials and the Works Progress Administration report ongoing street work. Oil has been spread to prevent dust and gravel added to water pockets to raise street conditions. Construction begins on a new bridge on East Fifth Street, wide enough for two cars, with future Sixth Street and Maple Street bridges planned to follow the same design.
