Former Clare businessman Otto Derby dies at Evart home
Otto S. Derby, a longtime Clare furniture and undertaking dealer, died at his Evart residence after a year and a half of ill health. Born October 10 1862 in Norwalk Ohio, he lived in multiple Michigan towns before settling in Clare in 1887. He leaves widow, two sons Oise and Frank, a daughter Lucille, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral held at his Evart home with interment at Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Maxwell Halsey said highway inspections showed unsafe brakes in 1 of 23 vehicles last week, down from 1 in 7 a month ago, with 1 083 good cars and 15 508 inspected. Violations tickets totaling 756 were issued during the month.

He was born 1887 and married Pearl Mecklwain in Evart. survived by a daughter Mrs. John Hesselink of Marion a son Frederick Fleming in Brooks Field Texas a brother William Fleming and Miss Margaret Lothrop. He held Masonic and Knight Templar memberships and served as Evart city councilman. Fleming Shoe Co. grew to a major regional retailer with stores in Evart Clare and St. Louis. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery with Masonic rites.
