Michigan horse production lags behind demand with 18,002 colts produced versus an estimated 25,000 needed for replacements. Professor R S Hudson of Michigan State College cites high spending on replacements in the 1930s and 1920s and offers eight feeding and management pointers to stretch horse use, including regular meals, cooling before grain, controlled water, hay-first feeding, nocturnal turnout after warm weather, and gradual feed changes.
