Governor appoints county defense councils in Michigan
Governor Harry F. Kelly reorganized defense councils in Clare county and thirteen Michigan counties under the new defense law. Reappointed in Clare were Laurence W. Jackson, Mrs. Ruby C. Garfield, and John W. Dunlop with Conrad Walker and J. Stuart Bicknell newly added. Ex officio members include the sheriff, prosecuting attorney, and board chairman. Councils must meet and elect officers within thirty days, or the Governor may appoint.

Successful Bible School Closes at Baptist Church
Clare Baptist Bible School closed after a two week term with a Friday program. Director Mrs Irene Brewers and teachers led classes with about seventy average attendance and eighty peak. Twenty three decision days were held with many accepting Christ. awards were given for memorizing verses and handwork. A Friday picnic and game followed the school. The group looks forward to next year.

The Michigan Motor Vehicle Financial Responsibility Law raises car insurance coverage expectations as of July 30. The law allows suspension of licenses and registrations for uninsured drivers after accidents, unless the driver proves financial responsibility by affidavit of settled claims or posting security up to 11,900 dollars.

Mrs Carrie Eliza Johnson Bingham widow of Farwell hardware man Charles Bingham died at her home Monday at 4 PM following years of declining health. Born February 15 1860 in New Hampshire she married Charles Bingham in 1835. Survived by son Fred Farwell daughter Edith Schroeder Flint three grandchildren Frances Schofield Farwell.

Valley Trails Council Holds Annual Meeting
The Valley Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, met at Camp Rotary on Tuesday July 6 1943 with dinner at 6 20 PM Dr Chas Anspach presiding Visitors were welcomed and reports given by Council Treasurer Frank N Andersen and District Commissioner Dean Shackleford District chairmen reported solid results including Camporees with 300 scouts Frank Rolka and the Grat iot Camporee led by E B Clark and C A Darroch Isabella Clare. Membership rose with 525 last year 1350 this year. The next board meeting is September 29 with the annual meeting in November Attendees included Stuart Bicknell Donald Holbrook John L Rodabaugh and Harley Holt The Camp reported 380 scouts in attendance with 132 this week and a season total near 600. C W Handel and H B Clark led leadership staff.

Life saved by alert locals and inhalator rescue
In Alma area a Michigan Bell employee and Deputy Sheriff saved Robert Williams by using the city inhalator after he became asphyxiated from natural gas. They found him unconscious, turned off burners, opened doors, and administered artificial respiration until revival.
