Shortly after noon last Wednesday the Newsoms home at Lake George burned with extensive loss. Mrs. Wesley Smith was rescued from smoke and furniture from the living room and second floor were saved. Estimated damage about 3600 dollars, partly insured. neighboring cottages were protected by fire fighters.
During a recent electric storm, James Crowley’s large Vernon township barn burned to the ground. The blaze destroyed tools harnesses and hay. loss partly covered by insurance. Crowley has ordered lumber to rebuild at once.
At the Ideal Theatre enjoy air conditioned comfort with a double feature Friday. Air Mail starring Kay Francis and Pat O’Brian. Saturday features Fighting Through with Kin Maynard. Sunday Monday presents Be Mine Tonight with Jan Kippia plus music songs and comedy. Tuesday shows 20000 Years in Sing Sing with Spencer Tracy. Also Peg O My Heart with a noted vaudeville act.
Sealed proposals for carrying the mails between the Union depot and the Post Office will be received at the Post Office until July 15. For blanks and particulars call at the office. Dr Hess Fly Spray protects cows for 24 hours and does not taint milk. Sold in bulk at Mussell's Drug Store. Bring in your can ad.
The Clare district holds its annual school meeting next Monday night in the school auditorium. Terms of two board members expire Dr A B Mulder president twenty five years and secretary George J White twelve. No new candidates announced at press time.
Wilson State Park welcomed over 7 000 visitors on July 4 with campers from many states. A pavil ion program featured gospel singing and readings by Revs Telder and Van DerJagt, plus American Legion drum corps. A baseball game entertained crowds at the fair grounds and lifeguards watched Rudd lake as Chas. Butts supervised the crowd through the day and into the night.
The Central Michigan Funeral Directors Association met in Alma on June 29 in the tourist park due to heat. Officers elected include President Michael Fanning of Harrison, Vice President Harry Rogers of Gladwin, and Secretary Treasurer Russell Thurston of Clare. The next meeting is set for July 27 in Tawas.
Arnold Hughes, an expert swimmer and newly appointed state life guard, rescued R. L. Spalding of East Lansing from drowning at Budd Lake Harrison. Spalding sank after cramps. Hughes brought him to shore, administered rapid artificial respiration, and Spalding regained breath within a minute before Dr. Sanford treated him at his tent.
Martha Jane Bellinger Moline, born March 4 1866 in Mt. Morris, died Sunday morning July 2 in Lansing after a stroke eight weeks prior. She grew up near Grant moved to Lansing seventeen years ago and left six children, ten grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Funeral held Tuesday afternoon at the Clare Baptist church conducted by Rev A D Telcer. survivors include Vern Moline Clare Florence Rolen and Clara Davison.
At a special meeting on Friday June 30 the Clare Chamber of Commerce voted unanimously to adopt the Detroit plan for collecting the 8 percent Retail Sales Tax starting July 1. The plan divides the tax by a bracket system showing averages and ranges to guide consumers.
Currie No 1 well south of Glare begins drilling below 2800 feet as derrick and machinery are assembled. Stewart Beatty No 1 on section 21 east side to spud next week. John Stoughwell No 1 south side section 23 Vernon drilling below 1450 feet. Verette No 1 east below 1100 feet. Carmiichael No 2 east Vernon at 925 feet. Busche well section 10 Wise township reached Dundee but drilling stopped to run six inch line. Chester Thayer No 1 Vernon section 10 awaiting drive pipe.
Last Sunday about 1 30 a m Barrett Lyons of East Lansing and Miss Jannett Boyce with Mr and Mrs Alvin G Hilinger and a baby were injured when their car overturned on U S 27 south of town while en route to Mulet lake cottage for the Fourth The truck that caused the crash fled the scene Lyons said a dimly lit truck was ahead and he swerved to avoid a collision The injured were taken to Hotel Doherty for treatment by Dr W F Clute and the car sustained 200 damage
Washington announced under the Farm Relief Act that Michigan farmers will be asked to cut wheat plantings by 200 percent from the 765,800 acres grown nationally. The plan seeks to limit 1934 and 1935 wheat crops to 20 percent, potentially reducing Michigan acreage by about 147,160 acres if all growers cooperate, with government payments expected to offset losses.
Mr and Mrs Charles Pfetsch of Mt Pleasant Michigan celebrated their Golden Wedding on June 30 1988 at the home of Mr and Mrs Ray Houghton near Dover The event also celebrated two silver weddings of Mr and Mrs John Oman and Mr and Mrs John Bithers The day included a dinner on a porch and a Dover Tabernacle ceremony with granddaughter Eleanor Pietsch playing Lohengrin s Wedding March and a long procession of relatives A highlighted account of their 1908 silver wedding was read by their son George The gathering featured relatives from Clare Detroit Farwell and Niagara Falls New York and a program of music and flowers throughout the venue.
Mrs. Jennie Bates traveled eight days with Rev. and Mrs. Roy Miller through Maryland visiting Hagerstown Cumberland Mountains and Washington DC. They attended ministerial meetings, saw the White House and monuments, and toured farms with harvest scenes. Bates noted farming, speech, and health differences and returned to New Haven Center with her family.
Walter H. Larman Post No 128 of the American Legion schedules a July 10 meeting at Command er Leo E H Oden home to nominate officers for 1934. Nominations precede the July 17 election and installation follows after the state meeting.
Plans firm for a gala day to celebrate the opening of a cemented gap on U S 27 between Clare and Harrison. Citizens and business leaders arrange sports, dances, races, and bands with guests including highway officials and local dignitaries. Aims to honor early settlers and honor Grover C. Dillman and Van Waggoner as the project progresses. The event spans Clare County towns Elmsworth to James Hill and will be announced in Clare county papers.
Sheriff Edmond Woode and deputies raided Fred Myers's Harrison home Sunday at 1:00 am under a search warrant by Justice A S Young. They seized 1 quart of wine, 147 pints of beer, and about 4 gallons of moonshine. Myers was jailed in Bay City and turned over to federal authorities for trial. Previous raids at the residence yielded no evidence.
Rev. Robert C. Warland of the West Flint Nazarene church starts a two week revival on July 6 with nightly 8:00 PM services. The outdoor tent sits on Oak Street beside the United Brethren church. Everyone is invited. Special singing and good music planned.
