Fourth War Loan Center Opens in Clare County
The Fourth War Loan and Servicemen Center opened Monday in the S. J. Burdo building. The refurbished space includes a large display of war artifacts from Guadalcanal to Pearl Harbor and Japanese equipment, plus a display of the German Mae West jacket. County Chairman W James Olson oversaw the exhibit with donations from local firms and individuals to support the war loan drive and servicemen outreach.

Mrs. Fred Schiemann a longtime Arthur township resident died at her home Tuesday. Born in Germany October 4 1873 she came to Michigan in 1910. Survived by husband two sons Howard and Clarence two daughters Emma Wagner and Ida Fisch one sister six grandchildren two great grandchildren. Funeral at Lutheran church in Gladwin Friday at 1 30 p m with Rev H T Brietzke officiating burial Highland Cemetery.

Clare lodge hosts grand officers Monday
The Clare 1.0.0.F. lodge held a brief session Monday then proceeded to Shepherd where the Shep herd Degree staff conferred the second degree on twenty one candidates from Clare and Farwell. Next Monday these candidates will receive the third degree in Clare with Midland Degree Staff present. Grand Master Charles Leonard of Hastings will attend, along with other grand officers. The Rebekahs will serve supper after.

Green Stamps Extend Validity For Processed Foods
The Office of Price Administration in Washington announced green stamps K L and M in Book Four will be valid for processed foods from February 1 through March 20. Blue stamps join them February 27 to March 20, after which green stamps expire.<Ration tokens will be given as change for both stamp types. Advance use of red meat points in Book Four was authorized January 17 to boost on the farm purchases of pork.>

State Highway Submits Vouchers for Tax Return
State Highway Commissioner Charles M. Ziegler submitted vouchers to the Auditor General for mixed tax refunds totaling 1,565,616.06 to Michigan counties. The quarter four weight tax and mid year gasoline tax disbursements include a gas tax refund of 1,275,000 and weight tax refunds of 290,616.06, with 1942 quarterly allotments noted. Pioneer Boys Basketball Suffer Losses to Evart Midland
Clare High School Pioneer basketball teams fell 48 30 to Evart Wildcats with Becker scoring twenty. The Little Pioneers lost 41 26 to Evart. Beaverton Man Frank Grady Dies After Stroke
Frank Grady of Beaverton died Wednesday morning January 19 after a stroke. Born in Beverly Massachusetts he lived in Bre man Ohio before moving to Saginaw and Clare then Beaverton where he worked as a pumper in local oil fields. He is survived by his widow a son Eugene and a grandson. Funeral services were held January 21 at Hall Funeral Home Gladwin with Rev. H. L. Cleveland officiating and burial at Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Bennett Farm Home Burns Down Near Clare
The frame Vernon Bennetts home four miles north and six miles east of Clare burned at 6 30 Sunday evening. Mrs Bennett and two sons Jack and Larry were away at Hess store when a kettle of meat fryings overheat and started the fire. Nellie Bennetts seven and Virgilene three and a half sheltered by Nellie escaped with Nellie telling her mother after hearing of the blaze. Vernon Bennetts had recently undergone surgery in Detroit and arrived after the fire with the home in ashes. No insurance is reported. A Grange hall shower supported the family Tuesday evening and they will resume in Mrs Pearl Youngs house near the store.

A January 19 1944 notice from Fort Brady Michigan states all Aircraft Warning Service activity in the Central Air Defense Region is halted. Civilian Ground Observer Corps volunteers are released and related equipment and posts are to be disposed of or disconnected while records are kept for safekeeping.

Katherine Boyle was honored at Sacred Heart church Mt. Pleasant with rites conducted by Rev Fr Farquharson burial at Calvary cemetery. Born February 18 1864 in Gratiot county she lived in Clare and Mt Pleasant for decades and is survived by two sisters Mrs Mary Wyman and Mrs Lyman Burch and two brothers Andrew and William.
