March of Dimes Campaign Aims to Fight Infantile Paralysis

Clare Pioneers Fall to Gladwin In Key Games
Clare High School basketball teams split a pair of games with Gladwin and prepared for Evart. The varsity lost 39 to 17 in St. Louis while the Little Pioneers fell 27 to 17 with many substitutions to give beginners court time. Gladwin later won 29 to 9 as Rex Wood and Rae led the visitors. An overtime 14 to 12 setback capped Clare’s night. Evart visits Friday with Cappaert returning to action alongside Chaffee Schneider Hartshorn Cochran.

Two Children Die in Farmhouse Fire Near Clare
A farmhouse fire on the Elmer Lackie farm three and a half miles east of Clare, Michigan, killed Robert Elmer Alexander and Darrel Frederic Lackie, ages three and under two, from suffocation burns and shock. The blaze destroyed the wood structure as Mr. Lackie tended the barn while Mrs. Lackie called him to breakfast. Coroner Andrew Friz ruled the deaths accidental and state police investigated. Funeral services were held at Loomis Missionary Church with Rev. J. W. Teale officiating. interment followed at Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Sutton becomes lieutenant after bombing and navigation training
Norman J. Sutton, son of Mr and Mrs Manuel Sutton of 806 Cedar St Clare, was commissioned January 15 as second lieutenant in the Army Air Forces after completing bombardier training at Carlsbad New Mexico. He is among the new triple threat airmen who finished dead reckoning navigation and aerial gunnery. His wife Roberta O Neill is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. The couple and their child are visiting relatives this week. He has served fifteen months.

Clare High School Opens War Bond Drive Tuesday
Clare High School students launched a $20 000 plus war bonds and stamps drive to aid the national Fourth War Loan. A replica panel will honor funds financing a Fair child Trainer Plane as eight speech class members lead rallies and tours to meet the county quota. Miss Young’s homeroom raised 6180 in a school assembly auction of stamps and bonds.

About a hundred Clare County residents and officials gathered in Harrison Monday to kickoff the Fourth War Loan drive. Chairman W James Olson presided as Lieut Donald E Holbrook praised the county’s past campaigns and urged maximum bond subscriptions. A Harrison High Band played two numbers and a letter praised Donald Schuett of Harrison for heroism in the Merchant Marine.
