A Lansing lobbyist backed bill aims to curb public notices of tax title sales. The measure would publish only a brief notice in one paper, hiding full descriptions and dates, allegedly to protect homeowners from tax title sharks. Critics say the move erases protections and would enable secret transfers of distressed property.
The Remus high school team outran Clare last Friday night and built a 51 to 16 victory with speed and accurate shooting. Clare players struggled to score as Reed City, upcoming, dominates the conference. Clare plans a home rematch with Ewart hoping for a stronger performance.
The Red Cross Welfare Committee thanks the public for a successful clothing drive last weekend. The Boy Scouts and committee receive commendation for aiding the effort. A letter will be sent to each county teacher to organize drives in their districts, with certificates for participating schools.
The Congregational church held a Sunday morning installation and consecration service. Officers and committees were named including Clerk Mrs Norris Elden and Treasurer L E Davy with deacons, deaconesses, trustees, ushers, and music committee. Life deaconesses were named Mrs W H Tilden and Mrs AA O Connor. The pastor led prayer and choir sang the consecration hymn.
The appointment for Clare County Friend of the Court was settled by a coin flip awarding the post to Leo J. Campeanu of Harrison. Alexander B. Wylie also sought the position, but local business support and a private meeting led to the coin decision after weeks of contention. The matter followed the death of John Quinn and involved Clare Farwell and several townships as petitions circulated.
Retiring Prosecuting Attorney T. Carl Holbrook presents for July 1 to December 31, 1932 figures: 32 tried, 26 convicted, 4 pressed, 1 discharged on examination, 1 settled. Total days sentenced 311, total fines $180, eight years probation. Mentions drop in major crimes and rise in minor offenses by youths. Holbrook, in office since 1924, did not seek re election, praised county officials for support.
The third meeting of Clare County Home Furnishing group led by Miss Frieda Gilmore at Clare High School discussed rug making. Members learned braided, hooked, and crocheted rugs and viewed state examples. Plans for Achievement Day were set with P Gibson. exhibition of 100 plus Clare county rugs planned at Harrison. next meeting scheduled March 7 in Clare.
Frank Battle born August 15 1869 in Port Leyden New York moved to Clare area at age five. He lived with sister Mrs Kate Dwyer and brother William near Farwell and died January 17 at age 56. Funeral at St Cecilia Church with Rev Fr Morrison officiating. Burial in church cemetery.
Condensed Welfare Committee summary shows Red Cross material and government goods delivered across 20 townships to about 287 families totaling 1112 people. Items include 33823 articles and 463 yards. inventory on hand listed as 39 overalls 6 coveralls 2 trousers 2 dozen men’s shirts and 463 yards fabric.
Authorities in Isabella County search for Pred Haines and an accomplice after they abducted Haines's ex wife from Mt Pleasant streets about 10 30 am Thursday. Haines, described as an older former local resident, is sought for questioning.
The Michigan Education Association urges reducing local property tax to five mills to fund public schools with state aid to maintain 1923 per pupil costs. Cameron estimates 1983 84 needs total 30.975 million plus 16 million Primary Fund and five mill local tax, after accounting for delinquency and fund shifts.
Mrs. David Seymour, who lived four miles west of McBride, dropped dead at her home on Sunday January 22 amid years of poor health. The Seymour family formerly resided in Hatton township and the death came as a shock to relatives.
Joseph Gamopie Gamble Sr. aged 76 years dies January 16 1933 at his Farwell home after a long illness. Born March 6 1856 in Ryescott Ontario he married Louisa Jane O Camel November 9 1873 they had nine children four died earlier. Funeral held February 2 with Elders Burt and Williams officiating. Interment at Lake Cemetery. Survivors include five children and ten grandchildren.
The Clare Natural Gas Association formed at a recent hotel meeting aims to promote the Clare gas fields. Committees include by laws chaired by L H Thompson and charter chaired by Dr F W McKnight. Membership chaired by A J Doherty includes Ervin Schlegel and Stuart Bicknell as publicity manager. The next meeting is planned for Tuesday evening January 31st.
A Monday evening gathering at Supt Kennedy’s home featured Japanese blossom decor and a miniature volcano. The game Volcanic Bridge delighted attendees with table shocks as Miss Glerum and Mgr Wehrley posted high scores and prizes were awarded.
