Twenty Clare county defense leaders met in Clare to discuss continued organization and duties. Douglas Paxton spoke for Pioneer Defense Board on school defense and preparedness. Andersonville reports Pat Methner holds patents for a beet loader that loads beets from rows beside the truck. The machine uses a tractor with a power take off to run elevators and shakers, delivering beets in a continuous stream. In a dry year it could load seven tons quickly with tare under three hundred pounds, versus about a ton by hand, boosting farm efficiency amid labor shortages.

Mrs Bert McGuire dies at Clare Hospital on Tuesday morning. Funeral services will be held at the Farwell home at 2:00 PM Friday afternoon with interment in Gilmore Cemetery. A life story will be published next week.
Mrs. A. J. Kane Dies at Home After Long Illness
Mrs. A J Kane longtime resident of Maple Street dies Tuesday at home after fifty seven years in the community. Born Hattie Hanson in Hanover Germany June 21 1860 she immigrated at age five. She married A J Kane February 19 1878 in Dallas County Iowa and lived in Michigan before Clare. Survived by four children Floyd Ada Charles Nellie died 1907 six grandchildren two great grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral Friday at 2 pm at the home with Rev Albert Dawe and Eastern Star rites. burial Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Central Michigan Bus Drivers Meet at Farwell Friday
About sixty bus drivers, superintendents, and school board members gathered at Farwell High for the Central Michigan Bus Drivers Convention. Dorr Stack of the Michigan Department of Public Instruction urged conserving buses, cutting rural routes, and dismissing on severe weather to save defense materials, and noted spring vacations would be canceled. Clair Taylor spoke on conserving school finances and future maintenance challenges for public schools.

Ice on Pavement Halts Traffic on US-27 Saturday Night
Ice formed on US-27 from James Hill through Harrison after Saturday night rainfall. Dozens of cars ended in ditches or against guard rails, with ten fence posts broken. Lionel King 37 of Lake George injured when his car hit a tree near Harrison Elevator. other passengers also injured. Nearby wrecks involved Miss Kay Coulter 24 and Miss Ruth Coulter 55 of Auburn. A furniture truck overturned on US-10 west of Farwell.
