Government limits on wartime truck production and delivery
The Economic Administration and Canadian Dominion outline that 80 000 civilian trucks are approved, a fraction of prewar output of 450 000 annually. Most deliveries fall in late 1944, with 7 500 approved for 1943 not yet delivered. Civilian use remains for war-related needs, exhausting the civilian pool. Emphasis on maintenance and careful driving as trucks may be the last for the war.
Truck Production for Most Urgent Needs During 1944
Harold L. Frier of the District Office of Defense Transportation warned that replacing old equipment will be slow despite approval of 123000 new commercial vehicles for the coming year. He quoted DDT Director Joseph B Hastman noting only about 80000 of the 123000 will be for civilian use, with the rest for the U S Maritime Commission and the U S Foreign.
