Grass Fires Keep Clare Fire Department Busy
Clare fire crews fought grass fires across the town last week. A blaze in a vacant lot west of the school on Wheaton Avenue was put out at noon without damage. Another fire west of US 27 near the Schultz home on Vernon Hill was extinguished Sunday at 4 PM with no loss. A third blaze at the Pere Marquette Railroad property west of Johnston Elevator reached bridge piles but caused little damage beyond creosote burning.

Harrison Soldier Wins Silver Star for Gallantry
First Lieut. Gale G. Lapham of Harrison Michigan and three other Michigan men were awarded the Silver Star by the War Department for gallantry in action in New Guinea and North Africa. Lapham, then a staff sergeant in the infantry, seized a .30 caliber machinegun and protected his men’s withdrawal from a position they were ordered to abandon, eliminating three enemy machine gun crews before retreating.

Cpl Leonel Green of Clare joins an enlisted choir to perform on a worldwide Christmas Eve broadcast from Bethlehem Jerusalem under British lifted restrictions. Maj Gen Ralph Royce Brig Gen Gilbert Cheves led troops including the six member choir with songs such as O Little Town of Bethlehem Oh Come All Ye Faithful and O Holy Night. The Green family received a cablegram on Christmas Day as the program aired from Jerusalem at 8 PM local time.

License Plates Go On Sale Here January 8 1944
Department of State branch manager Arthur Damoth announced that 1944 full year automobile license plates will go on sale Monday January 8. Only one plate is issued for 1944 to be attached to the rear. no front plate. Michigan residents with other states plates must obtain title and plates when their home state plates expire. Motorists residing in Michigan are subject to immediate registration. All motorists are asked to turn in old 1942 plates if possible.
