Flames Destroy Clare Home in Quick Fire Loss
The Dale Richardson residence northeast of Clare burned to a shell early Monday night. Fire Chief Stan Parish said an oil drum likely ignited oil on the cement floor, fueling the blaze. The couple had about 1400 in insurance. no one was home, and neighbors gathered as flames consumed the 22 by 44 foot block house.

Marely of Dimes Opens with Hart Donation for Polio Patient
Lieut. Gov. Phillip A. Hart opened the 1955 Marely of Dimes by giving the first contribution to two year old Patty Tingle at University Hospital Respirator Center in Ann Arbor. Patty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Lelton Tingle of Monroc Michigan, contracted polio in September 1954 and spent six weeks in an iron lung. Hart's daughter Ann, seven, has also been hospitalized with polio. The Respirator Center is one of several saved nationwide aided by Marelli of Dimes contributions.

Speeds Near Kids At Play Result In Fine And Revocation
A rural Clare man, Eugene Heller, 26, was arrested for reckless driving after nearly striking children near Clare School. He was fined 25 dollars plus 4 dollars in costs and had his license suspended for 30 days by Justice William Dunlop. New Year’s night, Russell Jones, 36, of Mt Pleasant, faced drunk driving charges with a 60 dollar fine and license revocation. Jones’s passenger Duane LiaLone, a Ft. Knox, Kentucky serviceman, was fined 10 dollars for drunk and disorderly conduct. Both men appeared before Judge Dunlop.

The Lake section crew on the C&O Railroad was split for transfer Monday morning. Marvin Sisco and Bill Smedisy moved to the Coleman section, while Sowle and Calvin Tryon joined the Mvart crew with Brad King from For nats. The Clare section crew also moved to Coleman, creating a 60 mile stretch between the two sections. New electrically controlled switches were installed from Saginaw to Ludington. The conservation department received about 200 letters by year end 1954 on deer hunting. Most letters protest some aspect, many offer friendly suggestions or neutral views, while others back the department.
