Drive to launch bean co-ops in Michigan elevators

A statewide drive to convert independent Michigan elevators into bean growers co operatives will begin within weeks. Osmer of Lansing said the Michigan Elevator Exchange will be aided by Michigan State College extension, county agents, and the federal farm board. If 50 percent of local growers sign crop contracts and subscribe 40 percent of stock, the farm board will provide the remaining 60 percent. Existing elevators may be bought or leased. otherwise new co operatives will form. A farmer questioned profitability, noting elevators trade around 50 cents on the dollar, but Osmer argued 60 cents on the dollar is a better deal than 100 cents in 1920.
