City officials discuss adding a two story wing to Clare City Hall to ease crowding in the fire department and city offices. A preliminary sketch shows dimensions of 473 by 45 feet 4 inches with an estimated cost of 45 626.63 dollars. The plan awaits voter approval after broader study and information gathering.
Earl Morgan plant manager at Clare Manufacturing joins Holley Carburetor Company as Detroit plant manager on March 1, shifting to jet aircraft fuel control systems. Harold Sandborn succeeds Morgan at Clare. Morgan reflects on his eight years building Clare and the community.
The Zelters plan a big auction Saturday February 25 at Zeller Dairy Farm south and west of Clare. One hundred thirty Holstein cattle and farm machinery will be sold after rental of the Currie place ended. Zelter and Frost jointly own the herd and gear as Zelter contemplates retirement and his son Charles pursues college. Lunch will be available on site.
Christine Carrow earns top written exam score among Clare High School seniors in the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow contest. She will compete to name the state candidate for All American Homemaker of Tomorrow and may win a runner up prize. The state winner receives a $600 scholarship. national winner gets $1,500 and an educational trip to Washington DC Colonial Williamsburg and Philadelphia. The school also receives a Betty Crocker cookbook and a prize set.
Clare High School band members scored four first division ratings at the Gladwin Solo and Ensemble Contest on February 9. The group included Jim Norcutt Eric Hammerberg Dan Loomis Martha Lacy Linda McQuistan Deb Nolan, Jim Wieferich Ron Dull Vern Hart Archie Dawson and others achieving second and third division honors. Judges represented Michigan State University Central Michigan College and Greenville High School. Next week the full band will unveil uniforms at the Oscoda Band and Orchestra festival.
Last week in the Clare City Bowling tournament the ABCs led with 2799 pins for the week ending February 11. Runners up were Ken Roe TV 2798 and Clare Manufacturing 2731, with Big Foot 2727 and Clare Huntin no Fishin 2708 close behind. Doubles high went to Don Smith and Wally Murton with 1219, Murton led singles with 593, and Doh Smith topped all events with 7. The event is at Gateway Lanes.
Karolyn Amble of Harrison was named Michigan Snow Queen at the Grayling Winter Sports Carnival and crowned by Governor G Mennen Williams. She previously won Miss Clare County and Miss Independence Day titles, and is a junior at Central Michigan College majoring in home economics.
Mrs. Paul Sheponski was elected chairman of the Clare City Library board at a meeting last Thursday evening. She replaces Mrs. Virginia Richardson who resigned to become librarian. Mrs. Richardson announced new books for teenagers inclining toward mysteries, plus two adult novels These Lovers Fled Away by Howard Spring and Boone Island by Kenneth Roberts, and new gardening titles available.
The PTA panel will discuss school problems including rising enrollment reorganization and building plans. Members from the Board of Education high school and elementary principals and the Clare county superintendent of schools will join the discussion. Parents can ask questions about reorganization building plans and crowded schools.
Clare Police Chief Bill Cook announced a new patrolman has joined the City Police Force, restoring the staff to four. William Bell, 37, a former oil field worker, now lives on Fifth Street with his wife and family and began work Wednesday. Driver licenses will be issued from the police station this week requiring proof of age.
Clare post office will have no mail delivery or window service on February 22 for the holiday. The Citizens State Bank will also be closed on the legal holiday.
Clare Manufacturing cuts delay production as Detroit auto demand falls. Indirectly 387 hourly workers were told of indefinite layoffs, dropping total employment from 1750 to about 1250. Plant manager Earl Morgan plans two daytime shifts and notes Morgan will leave March 1 for a Holley Carburetor post.
Women in the community host a World Day of Prayer program at Clare Congregational Church on Friday at 8:00 pm. The 1956 service originates from Cook Christian Training Schools for Indians in Phoenix Arizona. The observance marks the seventieth year and benefits Christian missions at home and abroad. Revered speakers include Rev Hugh Kennedy Mrs Hugh Kennedy Mrs Florence Bay Mrs Robert Greer Mrs William Hendrie Mr Harold Smith Mr William Gordon Mrs Gerrit Schutt Mrs Hiverett Cook with nursery care available for attendees.
The Gibson family hosted a slide party at Harrison with lamé colored slides. Each family brought a set number of home and travel photos to share while social pastimes were enjoyed. A note mentions Mrs Harold Skinner’s Gazette correspondent riddle solution published in Folks magazine.
William H. Grier has accepted the principal position at Garfield Township School in Lake. A 27 year old graduate of Central Michigan College of Education, he served in the military and paused schooling for three years. The Lake PTA plans a social Saturday February 18 in the Community Building with entertainment and refreshments.
Funeral services conducted Tuesday afternoon at Clare Methodist Church for Guy L. Autry who died after a heart attack on February 10 in Calhoun Georgia. He was a longtime Clare resident, active in church and civic groups, survived by wife Hilla Bates Autry and relatives including brothers and nephews. Burial followed at Cherry Grove Cemetery under Masonic auspices.
There will be a meeting of the Vernon School District No. 2 on Monday evening February 20 to discuss reorganization with the Clare school. County Superintendent James Knapp will attend the session. Voters in the school district are urged to attend.
The Clare Chamber of Commerce holds its annual meeting February 21 at Hotel Doherty. Dinner is at 6 30 p.m. with adjournment planned for 8 30 p.m. Reports include tourist information booth activity and winter sports standings. Officers will be elected and tickets priced four dollars available this week.
